I'm finally getting around to taking some photos of some rods that I have built for the gathering in Cedar Rapids IA on the 14th of November. If you happen to be in the area and want to swing by let me know.
First I have a spinning rod that is made with dyed and stabilized spalted hickory, the reel seat is made from an acrylic (magnum) blank. The blank was a St Croix 4S66MLF and the wrap is a spotlight star pattern.
Second is a baitcaster that I built on one of the Build Your Own Blanks (BYOB) from the St Croix Factory this last August. It's one of the new purple blanks that they just came out with, the cork on the rod was from their clearance bins and cost a whopping $1.00. I reshaped the cork and filled it and think that it came out fairly well. The wrap is also a spotlight star.
Third I got a chance to meet up with Putter at the gathering in August and to my surprise he handed me the bait casting reel when he finished it for his demo at the gathering. I was surprised to say the least, but wasn't going to turn it down (lol).
Beautiful rod art.
The BYOB program sounds interesting...what is it all about? Are they standard blanks, made from existing mandrils?
BTW, I was chairman of Team "BSIYOB", before the group was disbanded, for reasons unsaid.

G the St. Croix factory opens it's doors once a year (usually Aug) for a tour and you actually get a chance to build a blank from start to finish. It's kind of a neat program and it's interesting to see just how a rod is built. I thought that you just wrapped a mandrel, but there's a lot more to it than that. The blank is usually a SCIII or SCIV prepreg and they are painted a different color than most.
