Guide Finish

Just finishing up with build two which turned out a lot better then build one. Learned a lot.

ISSUE- On my guides below my tip top, the finish over one of the guide feet ( small diameter end of rod ) looks to have gone on a bit heavy and has taken on the shape kind of like a football. All the others turned out well so this stands out to my eye.

What if anything can be done to take a bit of finish off and get the transition correct. The finish has been on for 24hours.

the only thing you can do now is sand off the extra finish that on there now and then re-coat with a thin coat to clear up the haze left over from the sanding

If you had said this happened on all the guides, I'd say you had not levelled the rod on the drying rack. That'll cause the finish to "run" toward the lower end.

But since it's just one guide, it seems you might have got it a little thick in that spot and as it spun, it formed a lump and dried that way.

Well, sand it off. Another approach is to cut it off with a super sharp blade and then put the next coat on it. The second coat will effectively cover the first coat so that you won't see the "join".

Yeah, Footballing is common on smaller diameter blanks and happens when to much finish is applied and not removed by letting it sag before turning on the dryer. What usually happens is one will start on the butt side first and apply finish to the butt wrap & move toward the tip from there. If one isnt fast enough the finish begins to set-up by the time we get to the smaller guides and it get applied heavier than intended and thus footballs. When that happens stop & heat the finish just a touch and allow the excess to sag & wick it off before putting on the dryer.

I always apply finish starting at the tip and working backwards to the stripper guide. After application on the every guide, go back and wick off excess finish. Sometimes more than one coat will be needed to get it right.

I usually do the tip to midsection guides first then switch to the butt wrap ( if it has one ) for a quick coverage coat over the decorative overwraps while the epoxy is still thin & then complete the rest of the guides followed by wet on wet thickening up the coating on the deco butt wrap.

I like to get some epoxy on the deco butt wraps while the epoxy is still thinnest as it minimises bubbles getting trapped on the edges of those complex overwraps when the epoxy is thickening............no worries with the thickening wet on wet buildup of the butt wrap by the time I get back to it with the same mix.
