| Rod Arsenal
I am building up the arsenal to start going on some longer trips. Currently 3 day trips have been my longest and am now wanting to start doing some 5-7 days. Have started using the Super Seekers and want to stay with those blanks. Here is what I have now:
CLB90F 15-20 bait
CJB90F 25 bait
CJBF80 30 bait
CJBF70H 40-50lb bait/yo-yo
F100 Surface Iron
Looking for help on what might be missing on the longer trips. So far I do not have a true "tuna" rod so thinking I need to build one heavier but not sure. Any advice from the more experienced would be appreciated.

I'd say 1 more 40-50# outfit and maybe a 80lb for kite an or heavy dropper loop and you should be good

Yep, another 40-50# set up would be next for the 5-7 day trips. An SS-CJBF65xh would work great. If you're going with custom rods, leave the blank at 6'8". On trips of that duration, 50# is usually heavy enough. But, if you want a heavier stick just in case, I'd build either An SS-CTSF63XXh or SS2X4 for 80-100#.

Thanks guys....Hmmm...thought I was covered with the 40-50lb. The 70H feels like it can handle the higher end of the spectrum alright. Would a CJBF70 be in order for the lower end between my 80 and 70H or skip that and go with the 65XH?
CJBF80 30 bait CJBF70 30-50 rating 40lb bait???
CJBF70H 50lb bait/yo-yo CJBF65XH 30-80 rating line weight?????

I think the 70 is a good 40lbs and 70h is a good 50 lbs.

Steve, I like what you're using for 50 lb. That CJBF70H is great for either flylining a bait with a two speed reel, or for fishing yoyo iron. I also use it for throwing jigs and bombs when we're in the Wahoo. I like at least two 50 lb outfits so you don't have to cut off your jig to tie on a hook. So, get another one of those.
To quote John Grabowski: "So much of what we do on the longer trips, like 5-7 day trips, is to fish the 40 lb." Hell, Seeker even used his name on one of their rods. The CJBF70 that they use to make the 6470 is a great blank for fishing 40 lb. I use it with a Saltist 40; mine's backed with spectra and topped with about 100 yards of mono. My other 40 lb stick is a Black Steel CJB65H. It's the closest thing in the Black Steel line of blanks to compare with the Classic 865XH, considered for many years to be the optimum blank for 40 lb.
Good luck and good fishing. You'll notice a serious difference between 3 day trips and 5-7 day trips. So many more possibilities and venues to check out. It opens up a whole new world.

Cool...Thanks everyone. Even Capt. G for his nonsense post! Figured the people that know rods best are the ones who build them! Probably could have posted this in the 'Chit Chat' forum but might have got 'Chitty' responses......
Steve:
I have read your posts and appreciate the help coming from an experienced long ranger like yourself. Definitely going with the 70 for 40 and might just try a 65XH also...
Tight lines,
Steve

Tight lines,
Steve | Glad you could see it was a joke. As Salty Dawg mentioned, an 80 lb. rod is good to have, especially for the bait/dropper loop for yellowtail. At places like Chester Rocks, or Guadalupe, or the Stones, sometimes even 80 lb. is not enough to get the yellows off the bottom. Since you asked about building rods, you might want consider bringing a quality spinning setup(s) for either vertical (butterfly) jigging, or my favorite, fishing the tuna with the big poppers. True, you can fish these big poppers with a conventional jig stick, but sometimes the tuna want something other than a straight grind, and with a spinning rod it is easy to impart a jerking/popping retrieve that the tuna (and wahoo!) like so much.
