| Rain Forest Fly Rod
This is a 4wt 4 piece Rain Forest RF2F764-4. Customer brought this thing in and wanted it built, I tried to talk him into a nice reel seat out of some sweet looking burl wood I've been playing with and a nicer cork inlayed handle, But he was on a budget went with the store bought seat and plain cork cigar grip. Did sell him on some "Faux Abalone" though This was a fun build, Sweet blank. I really enjoy building fly rods and cant wait to use some of this burlwood I've been playing with

Looks good, I like the butt section a lot. Is it a tiger or Alps printer decal?

What exactly is "burl" wood?
Where does it come from.
What would be a typical GC (Gas Chromatograph) Scan for a non-porous, semi-permeable hydrocarbon laden anticline?

From 'wisegeek.com' - "Burl wood is a type of wood used by artists to create sculptures and other items, such as clocks and even some forms of furniture. Burl wood is highly prized by artists because of its unique shapes and ring patterns. Burl wood is a type of fast growing, abnormal growth found on some trees. Burl wood grows because the tree has experienced some sort of environmental stress or damage. This is often caused by either a fungal attack or an attack by insects. The number of trees that produce burl wood is quite low. In addition, certain areas tend to create more burl wood than others, because all or many of the trees in a particular location are likely to be attacked by the same fungus or insects. Certain species also tend to be more susceptible to attacks and, therefore, more likely to develop burl wood. For this reason, certain types of burl wood are more rare and prized than others. Often, a tree that has developed burl wood is still quite healthy. In fact, many trees with burl wood can go on to live for many more years. Other trees develop burl wood offshoots that are so large and heavy that they create additional stress on the tree and can cause the tree to die. When used in woodcrafting, burl wood is removed from the tree, preferably after the tree has already died in order to avoid killing the tree. It is then cut open in order to review the pattern inside. Sometimes, a single burl wood offshoot can produce several different pieces for an artist to work with.

Nice fly rod Bill. What guide did you use for the stripper guide? And the rest were snake guides I'm guessing.
I have a Lamiglass 5wt. fly blank I'm want to build, it will be my first fly rod.
Did you spline each section?

Capt........
you know the scars you carry from your occasional misadventures.........
If you were a tree...........they would be burl wood...............
Burls can also form where a branch has simply broken off at the trunk in a storm "What would be a typical GC (Gas Chromatograph) Scan for a non-porous, semi-permeable hydrocarbon laden anticline?"
About the same colour signature as most of the flames you have misadventures with |
