Acrylic inks and paints.
Though my handwriting sucks, so it worked out best for me to write it on a piece of waterslide a few times, pick out the best one, and apply that like a decal

I'm just a rookie, but I used a fine tip Silver Metallic Sharpie permanent marker on my first to builds. Turned out pretty good. Not quite as fine as I had hoped it would be.
Also I just picked up a pack of fine tipped metallic markers from Wally world. It's an 8 pack of different colors. Silver, Gold, brown(ish), red, 2 different greens, purple and blue. Like 4 bucks for the pack. ELEMENTZ Metallic Markers. Decent colors. Haven't tried them yet though.

Speedball acrylics for silver and gold. Higgens for white and black. With a fine tip in a calligraphers handle.

Mud Hole sells pens that are perfect, one in gold and one in metallic silver.
It's also my understanding that these are also sold in craft stores but I can't guarantee those are the same.

I've been using Pilot Extra Fine Point Markers for more years than I care to count. Silver and gold.

I haven't done any real rods, but on the only rod I did I used the metallic silver paint pen from the craft store. I got it in the model paint section. Than I took a razor and cut the tip to a finer point. I just had to wipe off the first drip. It worked good.

The finest line you could possibly get are from dip ink style pens. These look like caligraphy pens where you dip the tip of the pen into the ink. Go to an art store and and they will have a wide selection of tips of various thicknesses. They will also have a wide range of inks, from solid colors to metallics.
A few tips on using these though. Make sure you rough up the surface you are about to write on with some scotchbrite or 800 grit. If you don't the ink might not stay where you put it and pool up. Most of the inks bottles have an eye dropper built in. Apply a single drop on the bottom side of the tip, then practice on some scratch paper to get some practice and to bleed off the excess ink. Once the ink has dried, you might want to scuff the writing up very lightly just to make sure your epoxy goes over it. Sometimes, the epoxy pools away from the ink, but the light scuffing takes care of that. Make sure you clean off the tip after your done.

18/0 paintbrush and crafting paint in any color you want. The pens from the craft store and Mudhole are too large for my liking, espescially on small blanks. They make the lettering look giant...
