| Va Smallie Record For those of us on the "other" coast, seems a noted rod builder has posted to his BBS that he caught an 8lb+ smallmouth in VA recently.
Now, not one to doubt, but that'd be a VA State record smallie. They don't come easy - for those of you who haven't messed with them, trust me, they get good sized, but 8lb is a heck of a fish.
Given the source of the claim, I'm wondering why no photos, no general location, and no weigh-in? Seems it'd be worth the effort, no? Even if all you get is a certificate and a paragraph in the State record books and maybe a hat or a t-shirt from the State DNR - - - or was it just another "it would've been a Record, if I hadn't eaten it first" things?
Does anyone know more about this? I'm curious because I've chased these beasties from NC, VA, and MD on up into the Canadian border country. Come close a couple times in a couple places, but that's a couple times in over 50yrs.

| Russ,
I was reading that on the other forum as well. TK caught it on a fly rod and released it if my memory is correct. I think the biggest I've caught is like 2 lbs on an UL rod. I couldn't image one 8lbs. Randy. |

| I recently caught a 34lb largemouth in Casitas but decided to release it without taking a picture(I figured the flash might harm it's eyes)... |

| OK so you want pictures, well here.
Russ according to the thread Tom has pictures with something for scale that he took as proof. He will probably post it. |

| Hey Russ,,,, a few points to remember.
*Photoshop can do anything
*even Hitler got laid
*professional conmen and shysters exist because they are good at it
*fishermen aren't noted for their accuracy
Now of course I saw John fight a 100# blue perch on his 80XL on the 2.5 day, which they let it go. And in the dark, no one saw me with the 50# fish. |

You disappoint me, John.
You of all people should know that when taking pics of largemouth bass from 30 to 40 pounds, it requires nothing more than taking the sunglasses off your head, and placing them on the fish to take the pic.
Then you release your sunglasses.
On a serious note, it amazes me that someone would post about such a huge fish, without evidence (no camera, phone pic, or even from the throw away camera your kid dropped behind the seat of the car).
I am not saying he did not catch such a fish, but if he did, and was so poorly prepared, why post it in public?
His answer--"Oh, I really don't care about pics (recognition by other angler/peers). " Then, why post about it.
Duh...
