It may seem improbable but not everyone needs a citation or a record to validate their fishing prowess. The thing you never want to do is put your own ego or need for validation onto someone else. They may not be wound the same way you are. Just because somebody did not put in for a citation does not mean their catch is bogus. I once fished with a guy who caught an 82 pound Red Drum but he never put in for a citation. He was not interested. He just liked to fish.

A smallie will never grow to 27" in length. The additional weight once you go much past 20" comes from girth. The girth of this fish is pretty obvious from even this one photo.

The original article or thread I read about this fish was on a Virginia smallmouth message board and said that the fish had been weighed on two different handheld scales with the same result. One was a high dollar Boca grip which are reputed to be very accurate. I do not remember the make of the other scale. I do remember it created a furor and filled the river in the general location for a month or more afterwards.

The same ones who stated there were no photos of the fish are now pooh-poohing the photo. My guess is that they will now pooh-pooh the weight and scales used. Nothing will satisfy them because their aim in this thread seems to have been to sling mud at a particular individual more than to discuss a possible big fish.

youse funny. If you had any idea of the some of the goings on, you'd understand Russ' venom. You'd do well to find youself another idol. And 'he said, she said' based on internet 'proof' is pretty darn meaningless, and in fact highly suspect in this case.

.... I'm sure Sadam got laid too, tho most of the proof of that is in dried patches on a sidewalk somewhere.

Now some mud comes my way. Why?

The bigger question is why do you care so much about this fish? How has it affected your life? This guy wasn't jumping up and down crowing about this fish. He made a simple statement about what was possible with a #5 fly rod. The original poster here took that and started this topic for what seems like ulterior reasons. You are right- it is venom.

If I had posted that photo or said I caught an 8 pound smallmouth you would not have said anything about it. But because the statement and photo came from certain individual Russ and now you made a stink about it. Why? It seems that there is a personal vendetta of some sort going on.

Whether the fish weighed 2 pounds or 20 pounds has not impacted my life in any way. It cannot possibly impact your life in any way. So what is this really about? It seems a poor use of this message board.
