Almost a shame to smudge that thing with salt spray.
Great looking rod.

Nice looking trolling rod Randy. I noticed that you used size-A thread on it too. All of the ocean rods I've been doing have been size-D thread over the guides and I've been doing a triple wrap(under-wrap and two over-wraps). I would like to use size-A though because it looks a lot nicer I think, especially with colored threads. When you use size-A for your guide wraps do you always do 3-layers over the guide? Is there any compormise of strenght when using size-A if you do the three top layers like you did? Also what i've found is that when I do two layers of D-size thread over the guides towards the tip of the rod, it makes the wraps a little too bulky and that's another reason I want to try size-A. What do you think? Thanks.

Mike,
I use A thread for just about everything. The only exception is I use a larger wrapping thread (B or C) on the weaves and the larger thread is sometimes nice for inlays. I just prefer the A because I think that it looks more crisp (inlays, color changes, etc.). And, it's not quite as bulky as you've found out.
As far as strength, I doubt you'll notice any difference. I've heard mixed things on thread size strengths and have even heard that more wraps of A vs a larger thread size is actually stronger. Whether that's true or not I couldn't tell you. I've never really done any kind of test so I wouldn't know for sure. Somebody that's actually done some sort of comparison of the sizes could tell you better than I.
I don't always do triple overwraps. I do triple overwraps on all the rods with rollers and doubles on all the other SW rods. Singles on the lighter FW stuff. Just how I feel comfortable doing it. Triples are probably way overkill but that's the way I was originally shown and that's how I prefer to do it. Double wraps are probably plenty strong enough for the rollers. Everybody has their own way of doing things, that's just how I do it. Randy.

Randy, Rod looks much better in person. Thanks for helping me out yesterday. It was good to see you and Pat. Your ideas on painting the blanks are very interesting. I could not believe how well some of the color combos came out. I think you guys are on to something.
Took Jakob and the dog fishing this morning. We managed half a dozen croakers and one sand bass. Fun anyway. Talk to you soon. Mike
