| Tiger Wrap Color Combinations
Hey guys, I've been wrapping rods now for about 7 months and lately I've been experimenting with tiger wraps. I've done about 4 and only one has turned out really well. The colors I used were Met-Blue and Pearl-white on the bottom layer, then 3 coats of high-build, and then red NCP on the top. It turned out great but I don't have pictures where I'm at right now.
What color cominations have you guys used that have come out really well? I have had trouble with tiger wraps when I use metallic thread on top. Have you guys experienced the same?
Im making myself a nice vert-jigging spinning rod next and I'm doing a split rear grip so I was going to do tiger wrap there. The scheme I was planning to use is black, lime green metallic, and purple metallic. Do you think those colors could be incorporated well into a tiger wrap?
I plan on buying a cheap rod from wal-mart or something and just trying a lot of different wraps on it to see what works but any help you guys could give would be much appreciated.
Thanks to all that post on this forum also. There is tons of useful information and you guys are making some bad-ass rods. It's inspiring me to spend a lot of time on my spinning rod to make a truly one-of-a-kind like the ones I see on here. Thanks again.
-Mike

Mike,
I've done a bunch of them with metallic on top, what type of problems have you been having? That latest trolling rod I posted had metallic red bronze on top to give you an idea. Tigers are very cool because there's so many combinations. I think you could use those colors (black, lime metallic and purple metallic) for a very cool effect. Randy.

I agree with Randy... metallics work fine, especially on top where you don't have to burnish and move the threads around like the bottom. Stick to contrasting colors on the bottom layer (one dark, one light) Your colors you picked our should work fine. Do a test with the lime green and black on the bottom, and purple on top, and then test it the other way with the black on top. Heres a pic of one I did with teal and purple, and black on top. Pics a little dark. With a brighter green you'll be using,it should really stand out!
Post pics when its done!!

Thanks Randy and Ken.
The problems I had were when I did metallic gold on top with red/black ncp on bottom. All that could really be seen was the gold on top. I think it was just way too bright for the dark colors underneath. Also, I tried metallic purple on top with black/white on the bottom. I didn't put C.P. on the regular black/white nylon so I think thats why it didn't turn out. Once the epoxy coats were on the bottom, it looked blue instead of black and white. So now the wrap looks purple/blue and there isnt much contrast.
Im excited to try the lime green, black, and purple. I'll be sure to post pictures when it's done. I think i'll practice first with the black/lime on bottom and then purple on top and then I'll try again with lime/purple on bottom and black on top. I really like the way that teal tiger looks also, I might have to try something like that one day. So many projects, so little time...
Also, I just found out about this forum like a week ago so I'll be on here a lot more now. Thanks again for all the help and good posts here. I'll try to get some pics up soon.

Mike,
On the bottom wraps, the more contrast (black/white) the more pronounced the tiger. On the black either NCP or nylon is fine but I always use NCP white to retain most of the color. You can also paint the blank white underneath first if you want the white to be really white. Also, you can vary the thread sizes on the top and bottom (A & B/C or D) for different effects. Sometimes it just takes a bit of experimenting until you find the combination your looking for. Randy.

Hey Guys, thanks for all the help. I got to work on that rod now because I finished the other two I had going. I just put all the guides on tonight. And the tiger wrap is coming out great so far. I only have the bottom layer done right now in between the split grip and above the fore-grip. I ended up doing a 3-thread base with lime green met., purple met. and black. I'm going to be doing black on top with 2 sacrificial threads. Also, to make the green stand out a little bit more, I wrapped a layer of lime green met. underneath everything first and that seems like it'll work out. I'll be doing the top layer of the tiger tomorrow and when that's done I'll post pictures of everything.
Also, thanks to BakerStBobby for the tiger wrap tip on the finish. I did that on one with ice blue met., purple met., and black on the bottom. Top layer is hot pink NCP. The finish turnes out so much better for me when I use Bobby's trick. I'm actually trying that trick on all the guides too. I triple-wrapped them and put on a thin enough coat to soak through everything but not puddle up too much on the outside. Tomorrow I'll put the real coat of finish on everything. I can't wait.

| Finished Product
Here are the pictures of the finished product. The tiger is all metallic threads; lime, purple, and black on the bottom. Black NCP on top. It looks a lot better than the pictures show. I need to get a better camera because it looks really cool in the sun. It's a little on the dark side since I did black on top and bottom but overall I'm happy with it.
The blank is a Phenix 700H with split rear grip rigged up for a Saragosa 18000. Hypalon under x-wrap for the grips. Fuji NSG guides. Took it out to Point Loma for a test run and I love it. Didn't catch anything but when I snagged some kelp it wasn't too difficult to pull it up and the rod can handle a huge load.
Thanks for the tips guys.

It came out great. The tigers never look as good in the photos as in person. I learned a lot from this thread too. Thanks to all.

good job buddy, like others have said dark and light thread on the bottom, medium on top seems to get the best effect.
