Hand Rod Wrappers

Anyone uses hand rod wrappers before? Is it worth to buy making some detailed guide wrapping?

Romel,
I'm not exactly sure what your asking. Are you asking about hand wrappers vs. motorized wrappers or hand wrappers vs. homemade (like V's cut in a cardboard box)? Randy.

I have a motorized wrapper, but mostly wrap by hand. I just use the tension the motor gives when I let go of the rod and it stays in place and the thread does'nt loosen up.

I bought first and learned on a motorized...I like it better, it gives you a free hand(cuz you don't have to spin the blank)..But when I use the motorized I go pretty slow.

Hand rod wrappers?
The fastest rod wrapper I have seen in my 30 year rod career spun the rod by hand. I am not talking about a long solid underwrap--but wrapping on guides.

I play bass guitar (not very well--have been in some horrible punk bands). The most awesome bass player I have ever seen had only a thumb, and index finger to move on the fretboard in a most amazing manner.

I didn't come close to answering your question, did I?

i learned on a homemade wood get-up with v's cut out and cover with nylon straps. It works ok, but if you can get a power wrapper you will be lovin it. The Pac Bay rod smith is reasonable and works very well. I used to have a power wrap which was about twice the price, eons ago probably more now, and i dont notice a difference except the chuck was better. Maybe contact Mark at acidrod.com about a rod smith. good luck

I use a rod lathe handmade 40 yrs ago, but when I can't be bothered clearing everything away to use it I am quite happy handrolling . just some sliding door wheels with bearings in them at about $3 each & a rubber O-ring slipped in the grooves.
Nobody can tell which job was done on what.
Definitely easier than timber with just grooves in it and a bit of carpet on top.

TadyHawk,

Here is an inexpensive Hand Wrapper setup which mounts on a standard section of wood 2 x 4.

Each Rod Support consists of two Roller wheels mounted on an height adjustable acrylic plate. This adjustment permits accurate leveling of the rod.

There are four Roller Wheels and each one has 2 neoprene O-rings which cushion the rod and protects it from scratches. The Roller Wheels rotate on Sleeve Bearings. In addition, four (4) extra O-ring are included in the purchase.

The total cost of the unit, including Shipping, is $16.00. (The 2 x 4 is not included) To purchase send E-mail to: jhelga@cox.net

If your budget is limited and you're not sure that rod wrapping is going to be a major commitment a hand wrapper is the way to go. A great deal of the detailed guide wraps are done by hand even on a power wrapper.

You live in Mira Mesa why don't you come to one of the classes on Tues evenings or come over one afternoon and I can show you both hand and power wrappers. See the sticky at the top of this forum for phone # and directions.
