I almost always use CP and you can use any size threads you want. The easiest is to use A for the underwrap, B for the first over wrap and C for the Final overwrap. If you have to use a larger size in any layers other than the top you can always put finish on it let it harden then wrap over the finish. I often use A on every layer with CP on each layer to help it from shifting. When I do I use a lot of tension on the bottom and a little less on each layer over that. Be careful with your burnishing so as not to hit the layers with CP on them. Hope that helps.
Jason,
I build all my SW rods with either triple-wraps or quad-wraps. Meaning 1 underwrap and 2 or 3 overwraps. I do 3 overwraps on every troller I build. Is it overkill? Probably. Is it peace of mind? Definitely. Not sure of what type of rods your building and when you mean double wrap I'm assuming that you mean 2 overwraps. I generally include the underwrap so it would be a triple wrap. I do mine with all A size thread and each layer gets a light coat of finish. That's my .02, just how I do it. Randy.
Jason,
I was pretty sure that is what you meant but I was just trying to clarify it a bit. I like to put finish in between each layer of thread and it makes it easier to wrap your second overwrap on smooth finish vs. bare thread. Randy.
