I need some advice guys, I'm building my first heavy rods, bottom fishing for grouper & snapper. Normally my rods are light inshore 8-12lb rigs with single wraps.
For the double/triple wraps; what sequence do you use? Underwrap & epoxy, then overwrap & epoxy, then another overwrap & epoxy? I am not using CP on the wraps, does this make a difference? The rods will be a spiral wrap as well. Thanks for your help.
on my heavy tuna rods i do an underwrap then a thin coat of finish and then do 3 over wraps with thin coats of finish in between i do my rods with A thread and i use ncp or metallics i try not to use CP on this type of rods.
Ditto what Gaudalupe said for me too........if you are using larger diameter thread over the previous layer ( or all the same size thread) you could get away without the extra layer of finish between thread layers. If using metallics you'll need the layer of finish between the threads. Sprial wrap or not won't affect it in any way. Its all about getting down smooth layers of thread.
Thanks for the advice guys. I have one done with all three layers wrap & epoxy and they look really fat (big that is), but then my only other rods have been single wrap. I'm using all nylon Gudebrod A or Fishhawk A. So I may try coating the underwraps then do both over wraps before final epoxy.
Looks like the only CP will be on the butt wraps.
I've learned a lot from you guys, my pics should be up by the end of next week. Thanks!
Scott,
I do pretty much the same as Guadalupe and Ken but wanted to point out that the finish on each layer is very thin, just enough to coat. That will keep the finish build-up down to a minimum. You don't want each layer like your final coat. Randy.
