Something old (school)/something new

Tim wanted an old school 690 J to go with his Penn 501 with the old school red/burgandy side plates! He left it up to me for the colors, and knew he wanted a cord handle. I did a cord grip with all the turkshead trimmings, and added a (new school)tiger wrap. Guides are gold perfection/pac bays (or whoever makes them these days), and wraps are NCP tan, black, NCP Garnet, and gold metalic trim inlays all in "A". Aftcoat finish!. Hope you catch lots of fish with it Tim!!

Started with a Turkshead over a mushroom cap on an insert piece of blank

Tightened a Turkshead on the end, and started the fun part of wrapping the cord, spraying 3m adhesive as I went...

Turkshead at the top all tightened down...

Decided it needed something else so I added more "coils" and another different Turkshead!

couple more shots of the cord wrap...

Guide wrap and a tiger

Enjoy your new rod Tim!! Go slay some yellows!!

Maybe someone can make these pics full size for me...

Ken,
Great job! My favorite piece is that butt cap. Is that one piece of cord? The whole rod looks great. Congratulations, Tim.

Thanks Guys.... I really enjoyed building it! Jay and Jose, the cord is all one piece except for the top turkshead, and the turkshead over the butt cap. Since Tim will be using it on the sportboats, I wanted him to be able to replace it if it got too worn out.

Guadlupe, thanks for posting the pics!! I used a couple coats of Helmsman Spar Urethane Varnish (Spray can/Minwax brand)) in Clear Semi Gloss over the cord grip. Two coats just barely darkened it, and it still has the braid "Texture" of the original cord. I gave several extra coats to the butt cap Turkshead. Its real solid and should hold up well. I made Tim and extra one too.
