9000 rods, are you serious or pulling our leg ? You must be selling them cheap, makes sense though, the Japanese arent willing to spend any money on expensive tackle.

Have you done the math on that number ? When do you fish ?

I dont want to call bullshit, you seem to know your shit, maybe its possible but im floored. Tell us more. Im moving to Japan.

How many years have you built custom rods ? That comes out to an absolute ass load of order per week. Im just sayin.

If i ever get to 1000 rods i would probably jump off a building.

You have every right to call BS--sounds incredible. I have been very fortuante to have a brand name "Whitmer Downwrap " custom rods be well received by the Japanese fishing tackle market. Type in "Whitmer Downwrap" on google.
We have made 9436 rods, and have about four hundred of our "regular" custome rods or store custome rods wrapped and in my corporate inventory. Our rods start at $500.00 and go up from there. I have contracted people who can build to our standards (Wade build rods for me for years), and the rest of the rods are build by me (and my staff).
Yes, I have done the math and I am fortnate to be able to sell my rods here to the tune of almost 4 million dollars (some to the rods are wholesaled to other shops (a $500 rod is about $350 wholesale).
My swimbait rods are the most highly sought after rods in Japan; their is a six month waiting list to get one. Many Japanese pro's (all of which are sponsored by other big rod companies) such as Megabass Yuki Ito (my good friend), Daiwa's Namiki san, Shimano's Murata Hajime privately use my rods. My rods have been featured in hudreds of Japanes magazine articles.
Sorry for the long explantion, but without it, it does seem far fetched.
Again, I feel fortunate to be so well treated in a foreign country.
What I wanted to say in my post, and could have been worded in a better way, was that: "Hey, I have built and designed a LOT of spiral wrap rods. If you are having difficulties with your first one, PM me and I can help."
I get a lot of good ideas from this forum, and I try to give back when I can.
Peace,
Capt. G

I would also say you're fortunate to have your passion survive so long. I can tell from your work that you are still lovein' it.

Nothing like turning a hobby into a profession to burn ya out on a hobby.

I don't think I could build anywhere near 1000 rods before I went blind, crazy or both...

You are so correct--my fishing hobby that turned into a profession (Freshwater bass) totally burned my out. But do not think I will ever get burned out on the rod making, as there is so much new stuff to do.
As I have said before, I get some great ideas and inspiration for all BD'ers that post on the rod forum. If you guys keep up your creative work than I will not have to look for another job.
Yes, I have had a good ride here in Japan for 18 years, but 'tomorrow' my signature may read "Will build neat custom rods for food".
Peace,
Capt. G

Dude, that is unreal. But i believe you, and its awesome. That japan niche is insane. I remember when i used to Bum around phenix rods when Ty still owned it. It got to the point where it was almost all Japan.

Ive got good things coming real soon, inlcuding a brand name that gets no more bad ass, might have to snatch me a little piece of your pie, hope you dont mind sharing.

$500 a piece seems very reasonable for a bitchen rod in japan, they get that much for them here sometimes. Im just concerned about what Rick said. I did this in the early 90's and burnt out. Sold everything, practically gave it away.

As often quoted by Ty Hessel (Phenix), "Fishin rods are finished" he meant it too, sold that thing. Well, i guess if it blows up and i burn out, i can sell it. That guy was a fishin rod building machine. he didnt wrap but built thousands of handles, and glues lotta tips. That little co. was a little beast. i wish i knew it was for sale, i would have bought it.

Well, since I have now totally hijacked this thread,
Small world.
I have another brand, which I designed, and Ty made for me, "G-Style" (Short for Capt. Greg's Style of Rods). I also sold a buttload (alot!) of his "Proline Jigs", which I fish to this day. Here is a pic of the G-Style rods--the only rods that i have ever made without the Spiral Guide system. We made several hundred, and all sold...i-need-some-guide-placement-help-dsc04792.jpg

Phenix did quality work, and many could they turn them quick.
BTW, the "1091" is a registered mark that is a play on numbers.
How was the fishing today? It was "ten ninety one", or "I-Rei-Gu-I", which means WFO, or pretty damn good.
Peace,
Capt. G-spot
