Are you putting the hook inside the bamboo, or binding it to the outside? Either way, you should fill the end with epoxy. If you're going to put the gaff hook inside the end of the bamboo, grind a few small notches on the end inside the bamboo. Once the epoxy sets up, this will help keep the hook from slipping or spinning inside. I'd bind the outside of the bamboo also to strengthen it, as well as for asthetic reasons. You could even use thread, but most people use some sort of cord for a bamboo gaff. Others will chime in here, and there should be lots of pics too!
