Are you putting the hook inside the bamboo, or binding it to the outside? Either way, you should fill the end with epoxy. If you're going to put the gaff hook inside the end of the bamboo, grind a few small notches on the end inside the bamboo. Once the epoxy sets up, this will help keep the hook from slipping or spinning inside. I'd bind the outside of the bamboo also to strengthen it, as well as for asthetic reasons. You could even use thread, but most people use some sort of cord for a bamboo gaff. Others will chime in here, and there should be lots of pics too!

I was thinking on the outside and applying some cord like you mentioned.A question also about applying the cord. should I use contractors glue? That stuff seems strong .again thanks fro the info.

you can also use fiberglass and resin to secure it!

This is the one I did. So far I've done 4. Sorry it took so long to get the pics. But, they were in space or something whatever pics do when you can't find them on your phone/camera.

Thanks Jim, too bad it has'nt stuck anything yet.

There's no coating on it frank. There's no coating on the cord either. It's just real tight. I learned on this, gloves are a good thing to wear on the hand that pulls the cord tight. I did alittle flame marbling just for fun. Learned that I have to give it a light coat of clear first cause the color resin seeps into the natural valleys. I forgot the name of the company I got the bamboo sticks from, but it's off the 15. They got nice straight pieces of bamboo in all types.

ive worked on head boats all my life 12 years now.. and we've never had the need to fill the tip of the gaff with anything... do you know what kind of bamboo it is, we use a type called calcutta, the walls are much thicker the regular growing in somebody's yard bamboo...if thats not the case than i would reccomend filling the tip with west system epoxy
