Penn International 30 issues

hey i picked up this 30 on ebay to clean up and use for yellowfin jigging out here on the right coast. it was described as used condition, 100% functional, yea-ok. i got it in today, went through a checklist of things to check in my head before i accepted it and had a big problem. when i set the preset drag knob to where i want it at strike, then drop the lever into freespool, or up to full, the pressure doesnt change! no matter what setting i put the preset knob at, the lever doesn't change anything. somethings not right but i hope its an easy fix as i want the reel and dont want to have to send it back.

Sounds like it's missing a specific washer that goes under the drag lever that is found on many/most/all? lever drag reels maybe.

It sounds from your description of your procedure as though you set the strike pressure with the adjustment knob when the lever drag was at strike? That's a no no Senor, you must adjust drag range when reel in freespool. The later Penns have a lockout that keeps you from doing this, but the old ones didn't. That probably didn't cause your problem, but your unless you've got broken parts it probably is an assembly or reassembly problem, and can be fixed easily. You can get an Avet that'll do what an International 30 does for $225? hell of a deel. Would that be in vermillion or puce?

That is a one speed. That reel is completely inferior to what available. Id sooner fish a baja Special. Or a Newell 533. Fuck id fish 114HL with a tib before that tank. Send it back to the guy and let him find another sucker.

Hey Steve, maybe you can sell this guy a reel.
Where the hell can you buy the EX4/0 2 speed for $250?????

Sounds like the cam is not advancing. could be rusted or something not aligned right or missing in that area. If you are not familiar with the Internationals... get it to Jim or Alan. If you send it to Alan have it redone completely with bigger handle, greased everything, and a little of Alan's loving touch. Worth it if you factor in reliability over a long period of time.

Hey if you don't want the reel let me know! I had Cal go through mine, longer handle, lower gears, complete blue print. I have 80lb on mine could do a 100 no problem. I went through my Avet EX4/02 per Alan's directions, increased drag and all my 30 wide outfishes it.
