Name: Raymond Vessel: None Location: Monterey Park Job:Help Desk | Trolling reel for a 5 day trip I have a 5 day trip coming up in October and I was planning on bring my penn 113 4/0 as a trolling setup. Is this reel enough to do the job or do I need to go bigger? Should I put straight 80# mono on it?
I know I could always use the boat's trolling rods, just looking at all of my options.
Thanks.

Is the 4/0 a 113 or 113H?
I'd fill it with spectra 65 or 80# and fish short top shots of 40-60# mono.
If that is your biggest rig and you run across a death squad of Bigeye. Which can occur in October. You MIGHT stand a chance with a 4/0 full of spectra and 50 or 60# mono.

I use 2 for local stuff in my troll spread. I'd rather have a 2 speed at that size line test.
They'd let you troll your own. It can handle 10-20# YFT real nice!

Name: Raymond Vessel: None Location: Monterey Park Job:Help Desk | I think it's the 113H. I'd have to double check when I get home. I do have 2 bigger reels, I have the Avet 4/0 2 speed and an Avet 30w 2 speed also. I just can't bring myself to have those 2 good reels hanging over the side of the boat.
Besides a Penn 6/0 any other recommendations for a trolling reel? If I find one on ebay for cheap I might just get it. I would prefer not to use the boat rods if I can. Last time I used the boat rods the line was really frayed and the reel felt like it needed to be worked on. I didn't think it would be capable of bringing in a fish.

Name: Tommy Vessel: None Location: Southern California Job:Teacher | When I entered this sport, I bought a Speical Senator 114H for trolling along with a Cal-Star rod. I spend close to 400 bucks for the complete rig. I caught but one fish with it. I could have used that money on stuff that sees more use. Do yourself a favor and use boat rods.
I do not even troll anymore. I wait for the troll fish and then drop a live 'dine. A good 4/0 reel and Cal-Star rod is a much better way to spend money. But this is merely my opinion. Gas mileage may vary.
BTW, a 6/0 reel can be used for jigging, but so can a 4/0.
Also, on ever single boat I have been on, 60lb line was perfectly acceptable for trolling. There' no need to go larger, but then again I can only fish summer months.

That's right, it wasn't until I took the fluoro off the rig did I finally catch a fish with it. I wadded up the fluoro and was ready to throw it overboard until I thought to myself, "Y'know, TunaTommy, this stuff is good at catching morons! Why don't you try to catch a moron on the boat with it???" So I dangled it from my back pocket and walked around the boat. Soon a prospect left the school and sauntered behind my butt. Wanting to assure that this specie was really into deception, I jerked the fluoro and the moron struck. I pulled the bait (wadded up fluoro) out of my pocket and shook it in front of the moron's face. He whipped out a hundred bucks and bought it! Soon the manufacturing engineer from Lomita was tying the fluoro to mono and ain't caught a fish since!!!
Thanks for the C note, m'man, I had quite a drunk with it. BTW, you wanna buy more???
Good fishin'

UM, don't throw line over the rail. It will keep killing long after you are gone.

I still have several 6/0 that are my loaner reels for friends and family when they go on trips with out me, but if you are afraid of damaging the "bling reels" then your best bet is the boat rods or standby with plastics or bait for a drop back. |

Name: Steve Age: 59 Vessel: 18' Bayrunner; 48 HP Johnson SPL Location: Bishop Job:Freelance Exhibitionist | Time and a place for the boat's loaner. I'm not so sure I would want to roll the dice on a boat outfit that late in the season for a couple of reasons.
I have seen some of that loaner gear turned into a pile of crap after a long season and little or no maintenance. Clickers blown out, shifters not very good, low on line, handles bent and hard to turn. So I guess it depends on the boat. Do we know who you are fishing with? I didn't see the name of the boat, but I know that most of the premium long rangers are into the ten day season by October.
Second is that October can be Bigeye season and these fish swim right along with the rest of them, they just sometimes are a lot bigger! If there is any chance of running into one or two of those guys, i'm fishing that 30W with the two speeds. JMO
