old Newell p454 needs tune up

last week my non fishing buddy gave me an old newell p454 his dad used to use
its definitely in need of some repairs, probably new bearings, washers, and a good clean up, and lube
i saw the thread on here about cleaning and greasing newells but seeing that ive never had to seriously repair a reel id rather a pro deal with it

is there anyone on this forum that i could mail the reel to, to fix up (id pay for the extra or new parts if needed, and some cash for labor)
or maybe a local reel repair shop that is trustworthy, gives fair prices and will do a good job

there are a couple of reel repair shops down here in florida but i called them up and they havnt even heard of newell reels before

can anyone help me?

The guts of a Newell look almost exactly like a Penn. The 454 should be a 4/0 size, so the drags for a Penn 113H are the ones. Your shop will probably have the bearings that fit too. Your local shop can fix it very easily. Look at the reel tutorial forum too.

ddratler,

reels are simple to work on if you have any mechanical abilities. i never worked on reels before and fixed mine up fine. if newells have penn guts, then you have nothing to worry about fixing it yourself.

go stainless for the old Newell, no need for ceramics. Ceramics are better suited for dispersing heat, so unless you're going to be overfishing the reel, stick with s/s

i followed Alantani's rebuild thread and put in new drag washers and bearings, greased and oiled all the spots it said to, and put the reel back together
still though when i crank the reel theres alot of tension and its harder to reel.
also when i put the reel in freespool and give the spool a spin, it dosnt even spin for one second
does anyone know how to fix this????????.

Sorry ignore the pm I sent you. On the left side plate there is a bearing cap. Make sure its loose so the spool has some side play about a hair or so. On the right side(gear) plate make sure the bearing cap is screwed in tight. This might fix the free spool operation. On the cranking, something is binding the gear shaft. Make sure the gear washers with ears a seating in there slots properly. SS bearing are stronger but Ceramic cast smoother.
