Re: Loading Braid

The small bass reels for fishing the bay, I go with straight Spiderwire Stealth and no backer. For the bigger reels I start with about 50 yards of mono then the braid.

Re: Loading Braid

IF YOU DONT PUT SOME SORT OF BACKING THE BRAID HAS A TENDENCY TO SPIN ON THE SPOOL. TRY THE MONO OR I USE A PIECE OF TAPE.

Re: Loading Braid

Braid will corrode aluminum spools when used in salt water and not taken off, washed and dryed. I wrap my spool with tape, a couple wraps around and up the spool sides a little. When trying the braid to the spool, I wrap a double loop around the spool and use a uni-knot. The tape and the double loop uni keep the line from spinning around the spool.

i talked to Jerry Brown a while ago and we discussed the tape on the spool topic and he said there's no need for it. if you want to protect it from salt, that may be a different story, but you'd still need to protect the sides.

jerry claims slippage will not occur...

I do it exactly like this and in addition I apply Boesheild T9 corrosion preventative to the spool before putting the spectra on.

Make sure you wind the spectra onto the spool very tightly, or it will dig in to itself.

I just used 3M 2040 1" masking tape I believe, I've also used electrical tape, and duct tape.

Re: Loading Braid

Put some sort of backing on there, the braid will spin on the reel if it not put on nice and tight. And that is true about the corrosion from the salt in the braid. Its like a sponge!

Re: Loading Braid

I don't think Spectre absorbs water. I think the problem is that it traps water. There was a tutotial in the reel section, or long range section that shows the proper way to wash Spectre off, dry and respool it. I bought the Swifty Spectre washing kit at the Day At The Docks last year. It's supposed to make this process easy.

Re: Loading Braid

All line absorbs a certain amount of water. Spectra is trouble because the line is meant to last a long time, so unlike mono, it'll accumulate salt with every trip, never being removed. The salt will cling to the line and the only way to tell is if you lick the line. Mono, on the otherhand, looks frayed or dotted when salt deposits accumulate on the top of it, so most people change it every so often.

Electrical tape. Wind enough to cover the base of the spool, then flip the tape over so the sticky side is facing outward, and make a few more wraps. Boeshield can be applied before the tape goes on if you let it dry.

And yes it is important to remove, wash, and dry the spectra (I have one corroded Trinidad spool to prove this point).

Re: Loading Braid

On spinning reels I always have 3-4 wraps of mono at least before putting the braid on. Usually try to at least partially cover the spool surface with mono. It is a pain when you have 250 yards of braid on a spinning reel and it starts to spin on the spool.
