Love the Trinis but have caught countless yellows using a Newell 533 5.5 with 50 pound with no problem and at around $170 bucks you could get several for what you would pay for one of the more exotic reels...

They are also one of the most frequently used reels to target wahoo on the iron...

Just got a Newell on a 9' jig stick for the wife at the recommendation of many of BD'ers. Very nice reel and I am gled I listened to everyone. Cannot wait until the season gets going. I paid 149.00 @ Bass Pro Shops in Rancho Cucamonga.

Heres a quote from a fellow BD'er.

I'm not wanting to start a fight or nothin' and I do have Avets, but, the best Avet for a jig stick is still a Newell

Re: reel for fishing the yo yo iron

What # test are you planning to use and do you want spectra backing?

For 40#, a JX 6/3($369) knocks the balls off a trini 40($400-~$300) because of the lower gear. If you're planning on butterfly jigging, a pro gear 461 or 454(?-~$200) may work better because of the infinite anti-reverse, like a torium or a trinidad. You can save 100 or 200 dollars, and it's a better reel thanks to a double anti-reverse and carbon fiber drags. The pro gears just don't cast very well because of a hefty spool and you lose the customer service of the bigger manufacturers.
For 50#, the baja special($249-~$130) is probably the best bang for you buck. You lose the lower gear, but it's got tons of power because of the taller spool. Get one on ebay for about half price.
For 60#-80#, the HX($409) probably is the biggest reel you can get before dipping into the double drag reels. If you're planning on fishing the heavy line, I'd get this over anything else.

You best overall bargain would probably be a baja special. and I'd save the 533 for casting, rather than yo-yo'ing.

Re: reel for fishing the yo yo iron

If your using it from your yak then the baja special is a good choice. If it's from a boat then your options are endless. Go down to a tackle shop and see how each reel fits your hands especially since your young. Something narrow is an excellent way to go and again depending on the size of your hands the hieght of the reel is important to.
