Sorry Jay,

I agree with Alan on this one. After years of Newell ownership and service the Greased HT's have been the consistant winner.

Re: Newell P series vs S Series in casting distance

The graphite spool casts better if you're casting stuff under 1 oz. like scampis and crankbaits. For a 45, which is 2.5oz, you won't notice it as much.

I prefer the P series reels, you can't really see any difference in casting distance and the P series reels are stronger and lighter I love all of mine.

Re: Newell P series vs S Series in casting distance

P's feel better to me too. Graphite spool should take less force to get it going, but a well maintained Newell of any type will pretty much cast a jig farther than most anything else. The 332 just feels right for throwing iron all day. Trick with Newells is to keep them clean, and make sure the bearings do not deteriorate. Getting all the old grease off and re-lubeing them should keep them going forever. I have some that are nearly 25 years old, and they still work great. The new P series is as good as the original.

Re: Newell P series vs S Series in casting distance

It takes less inertia to get the spool of the S series to get spinning. Aluminum has more rotational mass. The difference is so negligent that it shouldn't be much of a factor when deciding what reel to get. All in all the ulua fishing power casters prefer aluminum spools for ease of thumbing and line capacity. I like the graphite because I can launch an 8 oz lead 100+yards and stop the spool instantly with no over run.

IMO, there is a difference. The aluminum spool is a tad heavier and can follow the iron better than the graphite. Lite graphite spools rely on pull but are very good for not backlashing. But once you compensate (thumb preasure) the spool you just killed your casting distance. I grew up throwing penns for 10 yrs, then Newells. My favorite was the p series 229, 332, 338, 440, and 540. Still have my 540s, 5 of them. But my smaller reels are now shimano Kaikon EVs, TLD stars and speedmasters. I still have my P229 for the small game short shot. Another draw back on graphite spools or any reels are bearings only at the spool shaft ends. Tch tch, tweak tweak. Spool load is now transfered to the shaft. Spin your spools (slow) now and then and check for wobble at the gear side. If you experience a wobble at high speed (casting) it could also be a bad counter weighted spool or uneven line wind. I'll get into counter balancing spools later. Toriums, Kaikons, Trinis, Saltist are all superior reels in the 12 to 30 sizes. Its how much you want to spend. If you need more drag? Saltist has a 5 stack. If a light casting reel is your concern try tld 15/30 or 20/40. I chose the Shimano Ev Kaikon 3000 and 4000, Internally its set up like a Trinidad 20 and 30 but an all graphite one piece frame and sides. Also with the same type of Centrifical brake system( I removed half of them). And the price is the same as the p332.

look for a early "g" series reel{g332f}. much better than an "s" and every bit as good as, or better than the older aluminum "p" series and blackies. jmo
