Shimano Thunnus & Braided line

I am building a saltwater spinning rod for my Dad who is not very comfortable fishing a conventional. I am thinking of matching it with a Thunnus 1200 and loading it with a braided line. Does anyone have any experience fishing a braid on this reel (or the baitrunner)? If so, how well does it fish or am I just wasting my time. Maybe I should just match it with the 1600 and load it with mono. Any suggestions?

The Thunnus 1200 is a very solid reel and can handle the load but it's a heavy reel. For such reason I dont recomended for jigging. Great for live bait.

I have the 12000 with 50lb braid on it. Great reel and will work great for all the local stuff and pelagics out here.

Concur. I have a friend from Florida who fishes a spectra loaded Thunnus on a whippy spinning rod out here. I have live-baited some 30# Albies on that rig without any problems. I think it would be better if the rod was rated for 20 to 40# line. Load the reel with straight 50# or 65# spectra and albright tie a few yards of 25 or 30# fluorocarbon leader. Good luck.
