Trolling Rod/Reel Combo help.

Help! I'm somewhat new to the Saltwater fishing game and looking to expand my arsenal. I currently have a 20# and 30# setup and am looking for a trolling rod/reel that is dependable and will not break the bank.

Any advice/info you guys could provide is greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Shimano TLD 30 II with a Calstar 660 H is what I would recommend - spool it up with 50 or 60 lb and you're good to go for most stuff within 5 day range.

No problem! I'm sure you're going to get quite a few differing opinions/options from all the "experts" on this board though...

Re: Trolling Rod/Reel Combo help.

50-60# trolling reel doesn't need to be fancy (unless you want to have it do double duty).

Single speed with a glass rod will do nicely and won't break the bank.

Maybe a Penn GLD 30 or a Daiwa SLD 30 (both are single speed graphite reels) with a calster 655 or 660? Should run you close to $400 before tax.

If you start looking at aluminum reels and graphite rods your cost will double (both of the above reels are under $200 and the rods are just over $200).

I've had the older version of the Penn above for several years. Other than a $12 bearing that I had to replace, it's been a great workhorse for trolling 50# for tuna. I have a similar rod as well that I bought used off of some guy on AC for $100.

Re: Trolling Rod/Reel Combo help.

If your thinking threshers, go with a 760H, if your thinking tuna 660H is fine.

Re: Trolling Rod/Reel Combo help.

For trolling on a party boat I just use a 6/0 on a 6460XH. I use it for dropper loop on 5 day'ers too.

Re: Trolling Rod/Reel Combo help.

This is what I started with:

Penn Senator 114H 6/0 Reel--3860RF Senator Rod Combo - 91414 - BoatersWorld.com

Works fine for a troller - RS/RT, but a bit long. You could do like I did and use it for a trip or two until somebody puts a Seeker American on sale and switch it out for a shorter rod...

Penn 6/0's will last forever if cared for properly...
