30EXW2sp line

Need some suggestions here. Going to PV in Nov. with some friends to fish for tuna. The boat has "great" gear, plus my other 2 friends are bringing their Penn 50's 2sp. I want to bring my 30EXW 2sd with 130#JB with the normal array of top shots from Baisl. Never have caught any fish of any big size on it so wondering if it can handle 175# plus fish? If you were or have used it on the big ones, what did you string it with? Or what would you string it with?

Thanks

Ray

Re: 30EXW2sp line

Ray, your Pro EX30W should be fine for the largers. In my opinion, 130# hollow is perfect with that reel and then just use the wind-on top shot of your choice. I'd take several LTL flourocarbon leaders in 100#; 130#; & even 150# in roughly 20'-0" to 25'-0" lengths if you are making your own. If buying from Basil, I believe he makes flourocarbon wind-on's in lengths of 25'-0" and his top shots are the bomb. Pretty good feeling making your own wind-on's and catching a trophy fish though. Just make sure you learn how to do it from someone who knows what they are doing.

Also, if you have 130# hollow on your Pro EX30W, you can also splice like a 100'-0" section of 200# hollow for more abrasion resistance during the fight. Really easy to do. Just splice some on & then make your loop for your wind-on's at the main line termination of the 200# spectra.

To answer your question directly though, your reel has the power & line capacity; 130# spectra should be fine; 25'-0" of 130# flourocarbon wind-on top shot is perfect.~

Re: 30EXW2sp line

Justin, thanks, thats what I needed to know. I feel comfortable using it with that on, never thought of splicing it with 200#, I'll do that. I can make my own with confidence, but all thumbs and Basil is easier.

Thanks a lot,

Ray

Re: 30EXW2sp line

Or, you can spool it like my Acc 30w, 650yds 80, spliced to 50yds 130, spliced to 10yds 200. With a very short topshot (20ft) you've got 700+yds line, no worries. (when that 80 is in the water you've only got 25-30# drag pressure anyway.)

Re: 30EXW2sp line

Jim, it can handle that much line? Like you an Justin explained, both options seem capable of doing what I want. It seems that the only problem I have is being able to feel confident in this handling a 175#+ fish. Seeing as this is a special trip we are making, fishing 3 days for cows, I don't want too be the one with the wrong equipment. But what the hell, the fish has to win once in a while. I know the drag system is more then enough to handle it. But like they say, "don't put the cart before the horse" Thanks guys
