Name: hun lee Age: 38 Vessel: none Location: canyon country Job:bartender | ill have to agree with smudge on all counts...i have a newell g220...its over 25 yrs old and still works like a dream. upgrade the drag and keep a balanced maintenence schedule on it and you are good to go. not a fan of the avets, my buddy's keep locking up on him and other stuff...just a bit too heavy for your needs. if you can find a good g220 get it. its like a collector's item now. its pricier than the newer models! it has caught the most fish for me and i exclusively use maxima 12lb ultragreen. i've got albies to 36lbs, yellows to 28, and bonies to 16 on it without a hitch, and everything in between, including bats and blue sharks to well over 100lbs which i just broke off, didn't want to abuse the reel on those but it handles all types of fishing. And yes, i was still using 12lb test! |

Name: Jose Chavez Vessel: WORKING ON IT! Location: BUENA PARK Job:technician automotive Bio: LIVE TO FISH | I preffer Sealine X-30SHA from DAIWA. Not to big nor not to small good for albis, Yt's and and bottom fish. Can't go wrong with a company that's been around for a long time and that is affordable and walks the walk. Don't get me wrong Avet reels are awsome but for those that realy spend money. The fact is buddy you need to try every reel that satisfies your needs. It could be Daiwa,Shimano,Avet ect.... Good luck!!! |

Name: Jan (As in Dutchman) Age: 60 Vessel: 150 CC Triumph, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot Ch 68 Location: Northern Calif. Mckinleyville Job:HAHAHA ...Retired Telco Bio: Former marine, ex commercial fisherman, full time wiseass | I've had the S series 220's and 229's for about 4 years and fished the crap out of them and have not had a problem with them.
Only tune up I did was slap in some greased HT-100's I flush them good with fresh water every time I fish and pull the side plate at the end of the season for an inspection and cleaning and a good lubing of the bearings.
Never could understand why the S series has such a bum rap. |

An Aluminum Spool will also be crushed (with even less force applied) but the failure largely goes unnoticed under all those wraps.. The Low Mass / Low Inertia Graphite spool is GREAT for casting and it has 2x the strength of Aluminum but when it goes it goes with a bang.. |

Name: David Age: 43 Vessel: 18.5 Boston whaler Location: Chula Vista Job:auto tech | I still think if your going to throw plastics in the kelp , a levelwind reel is better suited for that type of fishing.
I think the SX is over kill as some guys are killing fish over 60-70 lbs.
As far as the calcutta 400b, its a nice smooth reel but no where close to the Daiwa Luna in quality. The Daiwa is all forged one piece frame, forged side plates, more bearings just much stronger. I would say a fair comparision would be a 400 TE vs the Luna.
But the shimano TE is closer to 300.00 vs 230.00 for the Luna.
And the TE has way more parts.
So for about 10-15 bucks more you could get a Luna over a 400b.
