I know you already bought one but keep a lookout for a used Saltiga 20. I bought a used one in good condition for $100. Best 20lb outfit out there IMHO. I have caught albies (up to 50lbs), YT to 35lbs, dodos up to 35lbs and salmon up to 40lbs on mine and love it. The thing is rock solid.

And to answer another question anyone not using spectra is short changing themself.

I bought it off a guy who loved Newells. He bought it to try it out and didn't like it so he sold it to me cheap. You may not find a deal like that but you can usually find a used one in good shape for around $200.

I've been using my Calcutta lots over the past three years. I have never had any trouble and I have caught some 40+ pounders with it. It's a really nice little reel, but kind of pricey. I got mine as a gift from my non-fishing husband......pretty good choice for someone who doesn't fish.

I love my freakin Newells. Hell, I got 6 of them. My favorite rig is my 229 with wet drags. I wanted a bit more line capacity for tails and dodo's. I use my 220 for inshore stuff.

But the best thing of all (which is why I will NEVER own an AVET) is that I put all my shit away last year, forgot to clean it. Pulled it all out a few weeks ago, wioed it all down, changed the drags, and they're all like brand new. I am horrible at maintanence so my Newells work perfect for me.

The Daiwa Luna is 2 notches above the Calcutta. I was tossing some light jigs while fishing inshore in PV with the Calcutta and used a friends while tossing plastics in SD bay....nice reels and almost bought one. Then I picked up a Daiwa Luna....no contest. 253 for 15# and the 300 for 20#.......sick level wind reels.

Dude, Avets are aluminum and SS. Newells are SS, chrome plated whatever, and who knows what the frame nuts are made of. Disimilar stuff all over the place. Brass gears too. Some of the worst maintenance I've seen a reel endure was/is on an AccuCrap. I've got buddy's that rinse them with a hose and call it good. It's all I do with the addition of Salt Eliminator now that I have the stuff.

Not to Hi-Jack this thread either, but I am going to buy an SX at the Del Mar show this week. Is there more to the cleaning than hosing these reels with fresh water? How are you cleaning yours?

I am presently using an old Penn 25GLS and just hosing it down. Other than drags replacements, I have not had any probs with this reel.

torium 16 on a 7-8 foot rod. fish it for calicos and sandbass or bust it out in a do do/tail bite, it can handle.

When I went to Squidco to get my calcutta400 they convinced me that the Luna 300 was a way better built reel than the 400, so I got the Luna!
Spooled it with spectra hung it on a Teramar 8ft H & killed the Jackpot 40lb Dodo on my 3.5 Islander trip!
