i throw a 533 with 40 pound because 338's cant handle 40 IMO. When that huge yellow is heading for the kelp or rocks you will be sorry you have a 338

I'd go with the Daiwa Saltist 30T High speed with the narrow spool for fishing 25 or 30 pound. If you're going 40 or 50 pound I'd say the Baja Special by Penn

Re: Newell p series, or torium

Right on, I've fished Newells for only about 12 years and have worked deck on and off since 94, and you are the first person I've ever heard of that likes Newell drags. All of mine have greased HT100's....

Learn something new everyday I guess.

Re: Newell p series, or torium

Newell factory drags are the goodest shit? I'm with Smudge, albatross is the first person I've ever heard that thought so. Reelman, Hawk, ECNewellman, Bolle and other reel experts I know beg to differ. Go with Penn HT-100's or Smoothie Carbontex. Both are carbon fiber. Dry or greased is the only decision... I'm a dry guy.

I use a Torium 20 on my jig stick.

It looks like the number of votes will be equal for both reels. Lets try this, Newell 332 or 338 for 40lb throwing 45s and 7xs on the 100j?

Re: Newell p series, or torium

For you guys that are fishing the Tor 20 & 30 as your surface iron reel, are you fishing straight 40lb or backing it with spectra. If you are backing the reel what pound spectra and how long of a top shot? I have the 20, 30, and the 338 and am still debating which one to toss iron on my 5 day with. Chad

I go with straight 40 Chad to a double San Diego, remember to keep your jig stick close if you hit the lupe. Big yellows and you might even get that 10lb. calico. Have fun

Most you ladies couldn't throw a 100J, let alone land a fish bigger than 10lbs. Stick to bait.

Who you talkin' to? Don't make a comment like that here. This guy had a legito question about reels. No one wants to know how far I can stick my 100J up your ass. Take a hike outta this thread shithead. That comment is for the casting contest which will come around soon enough. And if you make that comment in that thread, be prepared to back it up.....

Chad, If you want to and I know you have allot of gear already but take my P-533 slammed and a Torium 30 set up for surface iron. Both have a tad of spectra backing but if you reach the spectra casting your a gawd.

That free's up another bait reel or yoyo for other rods.

But to answer your question. I throw 50# mono for Yellow and Tunas with a tad of 65# solid spectra backing, for capacity and to save money on mono refills. Pack about a 1/4 spool. I would NOT throw a 338 at Lupe or the Yellow Islands, 50# + Yellows live at the Islands and 100# + Tunas at Lupe. A Torium 20,30, or 533 IMO if you want to get em.

Seeyah soon.

When is that coming? Soon? I missed the last one. Maybe different classes this time? Leverdrags, stardrags, 25lb and under, 30lb and over? Before a 6 pack, after a 6 pack?
