penn 320GTI mod question

this might be a really really stupid question....but here it goes anyways.....

so on the 320GTI, as well as many other reels, you have the bar that goes across the top of the spool ---

what would happen if i remove that bar by way of dremmel?

ultimate purpose is to remove the level wind and make this an open reel....

any input is welcome.....

Re: penn 320GTI mod question

Best not to do it, frame is only graphite to begin with, and the additional top bar adds an extra measure of strength and rigidity.
You'd be better served to leave the reel alone and keep it on hand as the perfect loaner for first-timers, kids, and others who need something fairly foolproof.
It is really perfect in this role -the one it's designed for-, with 15 to 25 mono or 30 to 50 pound braid, and fish under 30 pounds, from sand bass to lingcod.
Of course there are tons of instances where they have caught very large fish, but don't try to make it be something that was never intended.
