I'm fishing the Calcutta 200TE with 30# spectra backing and a 12# mono topshot which I switch up to 15# or 17# depending on the conditions. My next reel is a 300TE on a Phenix 866L. I like the TN12 also with spectra backing and 20# for the bass in the kelp.

Shimano Conquest 300 loaded with 50 lb. black Nitlon Braid, Short 40 lb. topshot, on a Performance Tackle 8ft. Calico Special Rod, is the shit, for plastics, IMO.

I like using the daiwa costal inshore reel. it can hold up to 14 lbs of drag and is a great 12lb reel.. I have two of them one with straight mono for plastics and the other one for the wall plus took off the handle on one them and put a daiwa SL20 handle on so that I can gett more torgue out of it plus I have 30lb power pro so that I can cut through the kelp as well as has less strech in my line for when it comes to setting the hook. but it comes down to it what really matters is the gear raito as well as the drag because when fishing for the big calicos you need a high gear raito reel to get them out of the kelp/rocks quicker. which is why alot of times you see people go to bigger diameter reels with more torgue.
