Converting 20T to replace 4/0?

I just bought one of those lesser expensive 20Ts that have been on ebay/charkbait since penn is dropping the line ($225 bucks on ebay) - My idea was to convert to do exactly what Charkbait/Mark is talking about - baker topless, cal's twospeed conversion with blueprint, and use it as an all around 50lb topshot rig on my 6465H.

Anybody have any thoughts on this setup? Im building the gear pile for a 10 day trip next fall (oct 14 - RP with HI's).

Second question...picked up a 30TW, planning on fishing 80lb topshot on it. Calstar 760M the right stick?

Third question 100lb rig - 50VSW but what rod? Im 6'4" and 275.

thanks
Dave

1st question: My thoughts are that that's an awfully big chunk of cash to build a 50 lb reel. After the $225 for the reel, another @$245 to have Cal convert it and blueprint it and then another $200 for the topless frame. Might as well spend the extra fifty bucks and have your name engraved on it too. That will bring it up to over $700! I think I would have gone with a Tib SST for that kind of money. For much less, there are lots of alternatives for a two speed reel to fish 50 lb. One of those that comes to mind is an Avet LX or JX or even the EX 40/2.

2nd question: Gonna have this one two speeded as well? I would spend the money on this one instead.

3rd question: 50VSW would easily be the choice for a 130 lb rig, and the currently favored rod for that one is the Seeker 6463XXXXH.

The Cal/Baker conversion is pricey, but it's sweet! If you go that route, It's worth the extra dough to get the 4:1 high gear (IMO).

80lb. rod? Pull on a Seeker EX6460XXH. You might like it.

Dave, sell #1 & #2 on ebay. Buy a Accurate 30 from Jonah.
That 30 and the 50 is all you need for the big fish.gunz
ps. the 20T tricked out used to be the hot reel for 80lb

Re: Converting 20T to replace 4/0?

I have the avet 2 speed that I fish on a grabowski 6470h with 50+lb for throwing Iron. When I went on my last trip 6-day RP Oct 05, the hot setup for the 80-100lb tuna was spectra with 40lb-50lb flouro topshot. I was fishing my avet lx with 50lb mono, and the bait wasnt swimming on the long soak as the guys with spectra/topshot combo. So I was thinking of a bait rig for that animal, looking around the boat saw alot of gold including tib sst's doing the job....

So I would have two rigs in the 50-60lb class (one primarily for iron) and one primarily for bait?

Re: Converting 20T to replace 4/0?

How about the AVET 30. Holds a ton of 80lb JB and top that off with whatever short topshot you want. Even after the price increase, they are under $500 spooled up. $560 spooled with the 80lb JB on the 30W.

(I'm trying to sell my self on one, can't you tell.)
