Saltist 40 for yo-yo

Looking for some advice.

I'm looking at getting a Saltist 40 high-speed to use mostly as a yo-yo reel. I plan to fish 50# line and back with 65# spectra.

I have a topless YTS that has been my yo-yo reel, I'm looking for the higher speed. (I also want a new reel)

Is the Saltist 40 a good choice? Is there enough capacity to fill with 50# mono and 65# spectra? I hear there is no problem cranking a fish in with the higher gear ratio, is this true?

So if anyone has any experience with the high speed saltist, your input is appreciated.

I've read some reviews and it sounds like a killer reel. I'm just curious if it would make a good 50# yo-yo reel.

Thanks!

Re: Saltist 40 for yo-yo

the saltist are way killer reels, but I think 50lb line will be pushing it.

I would say check out the 50, but it's just to wide, but can fish 50lb line

I have the 30t and 40 both high speeds, I fish 30lb line on the 30T and 40lb on the 40. I use then as surface iron reels. I have a normal saltist 40 as my light 40lb yo-yo.

How about a Accurate 870x, it's 6-1 and has the drags to fish 50lb. Not to keep bringing it up, but how about an AVET LX 6 to 1 or a two speed? I hear the new ones are good for 50lb right out of the box.

Avet JX 2 speed with a short topshot of 50lb. Perfect spool size and drags are killer.

Re: Saltist 40 for yo-yo

Thanks for the replies fellas!

Yeah, I like th JX 2 speed alot, just a bit too pricey right now. Same for the accurate, nice reel, too much $$$ for me right now. I was considering the JX 2 speed. I have the JX 4:1 and love it.

I'll use mostly 40# line on the saltist 40. Just bump to 50# when yo-yoing, for when 40# won't keep 'em out of the rocks.

So can the saltist 40 handle 50# for occasional yo-yoing?

Saltist 40 should be fine with 50#. Just top shot 70-100yds of 50# and back it all with 65# Spectra.

Re: Saltist 40 for yo-yo

Glenn PM me about the bloodydecks JX 6/4 loaners. I need to get them back but from the testing that is going on so far they kick major ass! Brad and Reid put over 40 fish each on them and didn't want to put them back on the rack. Bruce on the Shogun cranked on it and was impressed.
I have been told it's a very powerful reel. Snapping 50lb by cranking in low gear as fast as they could with 30lb Yellow Fin Tuna on the other end.
They said it casts a sardine just as good as any other reel they have used.

I will be using one for yoyo Yellowtail this upcomming season. Fast crank, hookup, throw it in low, tear off lips!
Let me know if you want to try it out.
