newell 440 question

a friend of mine is selling a newell 440 (NOT the p series) and im wondering what you guys think of it as a 40# live bait reel. i know some guys love newells and others hate them. this is my first newell and i just wanna know if i should buy it or not.....or spend 2x the $ and get another baja special or something? thanks.

Re: newell 440 question

If you want to stick with Newell I would go with a 500 series. The 400 has the drags of the 300 series.

Re: newell 440 question

I have never heard of anyone doing that. A good comprimise between is the Red series. They still have the graphite spool but the handle is better as well as some other parts.

Re: newell 440 question

i dont know about you, but i dont think i could deal with a bright red newell.

Chris,

you know i love Newells man, so here is what im going to suggest.
you said your going to use it as a 40 lb bait reel, so i would go with a 540 or a 546. as was mentioned earlier, the 400 series is basically the same size as the 500, but has 300 series drags in it. but if your set on a 400 series, get the 454.

I agree with you on that one.
Thats why I dont have one, I used my buddies and I liked it but I would rather pay the extra bucks for P-series black.
