We have a 15 KG that is at Cal's as I write this. I agree with you that it is an excellent choice for local fishing. In the five years I've been at this sport, I have yet to see anything bigger than 30 to 40 pounds come off the troll. Of course, we have never been out longer than five days, and all of our fishing has been during summer months. I have seen some pretty big & expensive reels used at the stern, but I have yet to see Poseidon surrender anything that couldn't have been tamed with a hundred dollar reel.

If I could start this sport anew, I'd go out a few times with rental stuff and talk with fishermen far more knowledgeable than me. I have learned more on fishing boards like this one and from actual fishermen than I ever have reading catalogs! Y'know, I am pretty convinced that I could go out on another RRIII five dayer with just two poles, both with 40 pound Izor, so long as I could use the boat's trolling outfit for big stuff. That way I could save my money for fishing instead of tackle. But damnit, buying tackle is habit forming!

I personally fish the Shimano TLD's. I have the 15's thru the 50WLRS, and have never had a problem with any of them. If you want to get a Tiburon smart shifter, (very nice reel), get it now as I here they are moving production to China as we speak. The main reason I fish Shimano is really the customer service. It doesn't get any better than Shimano. Lately it is getting harder to get parts for Penn, and the parts prices have sky-rocketed lately as well. It can be a little difficult getting parts for the Daiwa's also. I have also heard of the problems with Shimano TLD's blowing up or breaking, but most of those the reels were being over-fished, ie:80# on a 30LRS, or 130 on a 50WLRS. If you fish 60# on the 30, and 80# on the 50 you should not have a problem. I caught an estimated 400# Blue Marlin on my TLD 30 spooled up with 80# spectra and a top shot of 60#, and it handled that fish fine. I would go play with all of the reels that have been mentioned, strap them on a rod and check the balance and how they feel in your hand, and the one that feels best to you is the one you should buy. They are all fine reels, and all the advice you are getting is good advice from excellant fishermen. Good luck with your decision.

i have 2 penn hlw 114's w/80 and 2 hlw 113's w/50. i think i'm going to stay with them this season (the poles are good too). maybe i spend the reel money on a g-loomis or two.

Where do you get that upgrade kit for the TLD ll 20?????

I love the reel and fish it all the time, catch lots of good size fish with it using 30 # line. Heck Magnum got a 125 to 150 blue marlin with it.

The only thing that scares me is hooking it up to a harness with that composite base, worried it won't take the strain. That metal upgrade is the bomb and will do me perfect.

HUMMERDUDE, THAT is a nice reel. Looks like it's built like a HUMMER! I hope your HUMMER is BLACK to match your reel. Give me the specs. on that reel? $$ - line- where did you get it?

Just a side note. Shimano is located in Irvine, just off the freeway. I send my reels every other time I change line. They charge apx. 12.00 and change bearings etc. They also update handles and update drag systems cheap.
