Reel Gears

To what extent do reel gears made of nylon/plastic/graphite affect performance? One major manufacturer uses such gears, and I have yet to hear of one fail. Would I be foolish to shun a particular reel because it contains gears made of something other than metal?

I am a committed Daiwa fisherman, but there might be a place in a battery for another manufacturer's reel for specific applications.

I do love my Saltigas.

Thanks,

Salty
