40# reel for surface iron

i had a 90j built by bd.com member MR.LIMPET recently and i am looking for a reel to match to it, it will be a 40# reel. looking for opinions on a reel for tossing iron with the 9ft stick. i have considered getting another baja special, but the saltigas cought my attention, i was considering a saltiga 40, but i dont have many other ideas, so let me know. thanks.

Chriscoobs; I was looking hard at the Saltigas as well, the 30T. After picking everyone's brain on it at the Fred Hall show it made more sense to go with the Diawa Saltist 40. Unless your going on multiday long range trips to Cow Tuna Land I am confident the Saltist has what your looking for and less money! (By talking with people I have not gotten it wet yet). I heard allot of guys on here like the Avets to. Although I have a Shimano Tor. there was a thread where the company failed to take care of a charter Capt. so I won't buy Shimano any more. I was also told by many that the Diawa Saltist will also outperform the Trinis but who knows...Just my 02 cents.

P-series Newell 533 5.5. It casts great and it's light. If weight isn't an issue, the Trinidad 30 can rip it in pretty good. I have both, and I prefer the Newell.

I tried throwing jig on my 90J with the baja special. Too heavy and I couldn't get the distance I used to get with my Diawa sealinex 40 and 50hv's... I tried to put a saltist 50T on my 90J but the way the posts are it wouldn't fit the clamp. Back to my Diawa sealines...

BTW how you like that mr.limpet wrap? I love mine.

Daiwa HV 50

Is smokin for the 90J..Smooth, 4.9 so a big Yellowtail won't break your back, the right price so you don't have to worry about a nick here or there...It also doubles as a good bait reel and can handle the pressure of a big Blue Fin Tuna!!! Trust me, it can handle it!!!!

I love the Newells. Can't beat their casting and they are so light you can throw with them all day. Gotta love the Trini 40N though. Lots of Bling!

Low budget: Daiwa 50 (about $100), mid budget Daiwa Grand Wave 50 or the Newell (about $150) Big budget Saltiga, Trini etc.

I've gotten some good use out of my Daiwa 40X. Can't handle bigger tuna, but handles Cedros yellows just fine.

IMHO: depends on where you're going, and what your plans are and $$$. take your stick to your local tackle shop and mount a few reels on it and get an idea of the feel. then consider the price. first and foremost, ya gotta know what your target species is...

If you don't want to spend too much get the torium or a newell, if you want to spend a little more the Avet LX is a pretty good reel.
