Dude for the money..... You can get an Avet JX 4.1:1 for like $139.00. I bought the 6.0:0 back in Oct. for $249.00. In fact charkbait had some black ones on clearance for $119.00. Hell of a reel for 120 bucks.

chriscoobs,

If your reel will have to double for tuna, I would go with the Saltiga or Saltist 50 with straight 40 P-Line or other suitable line. The gear ratio of the 50 series will retrieve nearly a yard of line with each crank. Personally, I prefer the 50 series, but the 40 should do well. Incidently, I own 4 Daiwa 50 series reels and a Saltist 40. I was nearly spooled twice with a 50 series, once on a Blue Fin Tuna and once on a Yellow Fin Tuna, hence my liking larger spool reels.

Good fishing,

Salty

One more thing.

The Avet SX is about the size of a jig master. The JX is the narrowed version for casting.

Hi chriscoobs,

Let me preface this by writing right up front that I am still novice in the glorious sport of saltwater fishing. Last year my son and I went on our first five dayer aboard the Red Rooster III out of San Diego. It was the first time I really used iron to fish; however I had previously caught a nice ablie on a Mega Bait lure on a three dayer. Anyway, everyone that I can remember was using using reels that appeared to be 50 series-type reels. I used a Grand Wave 50 & a Sealine X 50. Other fishermen were using Trinidad/Torium 30 size reels. This year we will be using Saltiga 50 reels and the other two as well. Now I do have large hands, and a slightly bigger reel is easier for me to operate. And fianlly, especially at Isla Guadalupe, you never know when you might tie into a 100 plus pound tuna. My Grand Wave Z with 40lb Izor was nearly spooled after hooking into a large tuna that was eaten after I fought the SOB to the starboard side.

Good fishing,

Salty

i checked it out and the 40 feels alot more comfortable. however im re thinking the saltiga because its 200 more then a baja special. is the 4.25 ratio too slow for what im trying to do? thanks

I read that it is equivelent to a 5.1 ratio because of the spool size.

Oh what the hell. Went down to Squidco and bought a (another) BCS6470 Capt. J. G. Edition seeker matched with a blue Avet LX 4.1. (on sale ..cheap) loaded with 65# spectra and a clear Ande 40# top shot. Should say I ordered them. Out of stock on both.....Told Joey he kinda killed the "spur of the moment" buy. Sorry, compare the 6470 to the Calstar 700M............. :FU: Can't see spending the extra $60! Seeker makes a great product. If you are in the market, saw some awesome Seeker (new) inshore series rods in the 7'-8' range that were nice. Can't wait to fish the Avet. This is my first. Seems to be a bitchen reel.

Ron

For throwing iron, I use a Newell 332. 338 is also good. Kinda want to try out an SLX40
