IMHO: depends on where you're going, and what your plans are and $$$. take your stick to your local tackle shop and mount a few reels on it and get an idea of the feel. then consider the price. first and foremost, ya gotta know what your target species is...

If you don't want to spend too much get the torium or a newell, if you want to spend a little more the Avet LX is a pretty good reel.

First Choice = Avet

Second Choice = Newell

Third Choice = Swap meet Jigmaster (seriously, I have one that I bought 5 years ago, it's at least 20 years old and I still take it out as a back up rig. Best $35.00 I ever spent.)

I have a newell 322-5 on mine and it rippppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppps with 40lb on it. I may have to get some spectra cause it does not hold a lot ot 40 lb. But ad far as casting goes I think it is better than my saltiga 30t.

agree with darlurker...I was fishing the Trini 20, Saltiga 30 and PG 454 on my long rod before I took the same rod in the shop, matched a few reels and ended up with Trini 30...something about the size of your hand :jo: the way you hold your reel and the leverage on the cast...

I still fish the jigmaster I newelled out back in 94'. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. I fish it on a 100J though. Can't go wrong with a P series Newell 533 though.

A 90J matched with a 338 is sweet.

I like a reel with a shoulder on the spool, so the Pro Gears are good for me.

I use the PG 454, 540 or the 545 for local stuff.

Clear as mud eh?

what do you think between the saltiga 30 rigged with spectra and 40# topshot or saltiga 40 with strait mono would do better for surface iron work (the 30 has a 5.4 ratio while the 40 has a 4.9 ratio) thanks

How much line do each take up?

the ratio is only reverent to the diameter of the spool
