Newell?

What's the differences in models of Newells?

I forgot what it is.

C Series = Crap

G = Graphite

P = Perfect

S = ?

What about the one's without letters? For example, 338-5 on the right side, and GRAPHITE on the left?

Is that what a blackie is?

Anyway, any help would be great. I love these reels, but deciding on which to get.

g series has grafite spool, handle, side plates.
the p series is the better of all of them. it has an aluminum spool and handle which is able to take more abuse.

like alex said get the p series if you can

g series by far the best imo. p second best, stronger, but more prone to corrosion issues... needs nuch more maint than the g. with spectra backing less prone to blow a graphit spool. if you like taking your reel apart to clean it more often get a p. if you're like me, a little lazy, get the g. i've caught tons of fish on my old original g's. i still have a few that carl newell gave us when we worked at the original dana bait and tackle in the late 70's early 80's. g's cast better than p's too.

Good read.

Answered my questions.

Thanks for the input guys. Now if I can just learn how to cast this NO LETTER SERIES I will be good to go. Hopefully I can see you guys out there sometime soon!

what tunacious didnt say about "blackies" is the really good tollerance around the spool/frame rings. you want a 220 or 229 that doesnt eat 15# - get a blackie. i also think it casts everso slighty better than any of the p's and - save for the 'cracking' sideplates - built better than all of them. the qc back then was great. the g's are very cool too.

I'll have to agree with Mattanza. I have an old red label G229-F matched up to an original Sabre Stroker that I got for my 9th or 10th birthday. It's still my favorite go-to rig for everything from calicos to bluefin. I break it down every off season, and after 20-some years, it still on the original everything except drag washers and looks brand new on the inside. It still casts like it was brand new.

nice.

Turns out I already got one just today, it's actually the NO LETTER SERIES, specifically the 338-5 with GRAPHITE on the opposite side.

I got it from a buddy of mine who got it from his dad who doesn't fish anymore, so I lucked out. It's in great condition, and I just spooled it with the run of the mill 40lb ANDE in pink. First time trying that kinda line.

Now I gotta try and not bird's nest it like all my others haha

I need to get out on the water =(
