Daiwa Saltist 40HA Levelwind

Well, I decided to open up my new Daiwa Saltist 40 Levelwind today to put the Carbontex drag washers in. I have not yet used this reel in the water, but I figured I would do it right off of the bat. I am planning to use this reel for Cod, Mahi, and lighter Saltwater duty. No plans for Tuna as of yet with it!

I'm gonna to name the things as I saw them, not by Key. I may convert to key # later, but they are pretty simple!

Copy of the Saltist LW schematic for the 40 and 50:

Step 1: Unscrew the little lock screw

Step 2: Unscrew the Handle Nut

Step 3: Remove handle and the thick washer behind it.

Step 4: Unscrew Star. I left all of the internals inside it as I wasn't touching that stuff yet!

The next Pic also shows the little bronze color washer that was stuck to the back of the star by grease. I left it alone.

This one shows the top of the internals of the star:

Step 7: Pics 7 and 8 show the main shaft from the top, as well as the order and orientation of the bellvue washers.

Pic 9: Shows all of the main shaft components laid out in order

Step 10: Unscrew Clicker Knob and 5 screws holding side plate on

Step 11: Lift Off! Shows the underside of the sideplate, with more internals left in place.

Pic 13: Shows the rest of the internals and main shaft/reverse dog setup.

Step 14: Disassemble Drag stack. I got a suprise here as you can see!!!! Already Carbon Fiber Drags installed and slightly greased???? A little different that the CarbonTex, so I cleaned the steel washers, regreased with Cals and blotted clean and reassembled.

Step 16: Swap stock washer for Carbontex small washer after I greased/blotted the Carbontex with Cals.

Pic of Carbontex vs Stock small washer.

Pic of Stock washer. Looks to be a phenolic of some sort from the pattern?? Looks similar to Micarta or G10 laminates I used to use when I made knives for the handles. Not a thin paper washer that Alan found in earlier Saltists!!!

Now you just put the main gear back onto the main shaft after rebuilding the drag stack, and reverse the above steps!

Replace sideplate and screw back onto frame. I greased the screw holes, too. Replace clicker knob, but leave loose. Install small washer, Bellevues, odd spring looking thingy (drag click spring assembly spring and holder). Screw on star, then the thick washer, handle, handle nut and lock screw. Done! I reinstalled my handle to the longer throw position for better leverage since this is the 6.4:1 ratio.

Nice and easy!!! I didn't test the drag before and after since I only swapped out 1 washer for a Carbontex. I was more concerned in greasing the washers to protect from saltwater and open up the reel and see the internals so I know how to open it for service if needed.

I did the upgrade to my Shimano Tekota 600 yesterday, I may reopen it and do a tutorial, but it is almost identical to the Torium IIRC. I followed those instructions w/o a problem.

most excellent! i found the same thing in a small saltist 20 that i worked on last week. another reel company has joined the darkside!

i'm guessing you did this work at the kitchen table. you will know that you have truely made the grade when you wife kicks you out of the kitchen and into the garage because of grease stains on the kitchen table. don't let that discourage you, though. hiding out in the garage for hours on end can be a peaceful respite from the naggings of the old lady. alan

. I went thru that with Gun cleaning on the kitchen table. To make it worse...no wife, I live with the parents still!! Parents are worse...double the nagging, none of the "fringe" benefits. Got banished to the basement. I got smarter. I used paper towels all under the reel stuff to keep the table cloth clean

It was pretty cool to open it up and see the CF washers!!

Now I gotta try my Shimano Saros spinning reels. Could get interesting there, never did a spinner before!!

Phew. Just took apart my Shimano Sienna 2500 spinning reel. Didn't do a full strip, checked the drag (oiled felt washers) and opened up and removed the side plate to get at the gears and bearings, and the bail flip spring. Forgot which screw went where and had to do some trial and error Got everything back together again though!

Next up was the Saros, just opened the Maint port, squirted some ReelX into it, closed back up Checked the drags, felt washers. Wonder if anyone makes Carbontex for a Saros 4000??? I'll have to get some measurements later.

here's a link to the "drag washer dimensions" post. measure your drag washers and find one that has a similar outside diameter. the inside diameter does not matter. you're probably looking at a #6-155 or #6-60. you can order them through your local shop, or send me you address and i can ship some out to you as well. alan

I'll break out the digi mike and get the measurements tomorrow. I think we created a monster! I just tuned up a $35 Shimano Sienna 2500FB I took it apart before, but it kept getting stuck inside, it wasn't smooth like it was before. So I found the box with the schematics on it and did a full strip and rebuild of the gears, adding SpeedX to the bearings and contact points, and reassembling the correct way this time! Much smoother than it was before! Tomorrow will be the Saros' turn, and maybe my UL reels
