Need suggestions for big game spinning reel

Guys,
First off, I know the term "big game spinning reel" may seem like an oxymoron, but I have a specific need so bear with me.

I need a spinning reel to throw big poppers to tuna up to 70 pounds. The fish will be at the surface obviously, and the water will be hundreds of feet deep, just for a reference- I need not get them off of a shallow reef immediately. I cannot afford a Stella, Accurate, or Van Stahl. I think I will buy a Penn 8500, or 9500 or 950 or whatever they make now, or a Shimano Thunnus or Spheros. Probably rig it up with 80# Tuff Line. I think I have a Lamiglass 2 piece 8 foot rod to use.

My experience with large spinning reels is only with Penn- but I only used them for surf fishing. I will be sending them to Alan Tani for a bit of a bulk-up in drags once I make a decision, and I know they are not the optimum setup for fish like this. See, I will be chasing after roving schools of fish in my kayak, on the run. In the heat of the moment, I do not want to deal with potential backlashes- my jig-tossing skills just aren't reliable enough under pressure.

Anyway, the Penn seems to still be well built. The Thunnus and Speros seem nice but a bit less rugged- flashy paint, but I took off the spool and it looked, uh, not so ballsy.(I ain't no expert). I only plan to use them for throwing big poppers, so the thing on the Thunnus that lets me troll baits at a reduced drag setting doesn't matter.

The weights of the Thunnus and Penn seem to be close enough so that I would rather base it on what has the best chance of lasting through some fights, rather than saving a couple ounces in weight.

Tx very much guys,
Jon Schwartz

Don't forget you can spectra these too. 100 yard top shot and you have a good big fish reel.

Maybe a Shimano Stradic 8000Fi, new on ebay for $164 and free shipping, I got near 300 yards of 50lb braid on mine, its got a aluminum frame and good drag and features for the price. If you like penn the new 760 Slammer is about the same price, it holds a little more line than the 650 penns and seem to be built better

Look for a Shimano Twinpower 8000. Plenty of reel to catch a 70lb tuna and it is a ton lighter than the Thunnus.

If you use an older penn 850ss then go ahead, these were made in the usa. The new ones are made in china an dsuck. You can pick up a used 850ss and have alan upgrade it or you can go with a quantum cabo spinning reel 60 model. I prefer then older penn reels cause they've never let me down and parts are rather inexpensive. That's just my two cents worth.
