Topshot

I have been reading and learning from this board for the last several months and have come up with a question. I see that many people have a mono topshot on their reels with Spectra as a backer. Some have said the Spectra is good for cutting through the kelp and getting fish to the boat. With that being said wouldn't the topshot be the major concern with being cut in the kelp since there is up to 60 yards on most reels? I am very new to a lot of saltwater fishing and this may be a dumb question, but I am just curious. Thanks for any replies.

Tim

If you are running a kelp cutter your top shot is only 3' to 6' in length.

I only have about 10' of flourocarbon for my top shot. Example of my kelp cutter: Avet SX with 30# spectra and about 10' of 15# flourocarbon. You will learn that spectra is the best thing out there. Good luck

I run a Topshot on all my reels for Gamefishing(marlin and tuna) Its a lot cheaper cos I don't have to change a whole reel of mono each season and the dacron lasts 2-3 seasons. Also it means I can fit a lot more line on the spool as opposed to running straight mono. I run 50wlrsa Tiagra's with 700yds of 24kg IGFA dacron then have 280yds of 24kg Momoi on top
