Penn 113HN baja special

Why did Penn discontinue this reel?

My wife bought me one as a gift last year and I love it.

Yup, there are still close outs deals out there once in a while. I have 2 and really like them. The sales never took off like they thought - I think that $250+ for the reel when they first came out was too much. The Penn rep at FHS said they felt they needed to have a metal reel to compete in that line class so now they have that new Metal Senator that feels like a tank. I think they made a mistake.

Penn was unfortunately way late to the party with this reel. I have two and like them both very much. They put out great drag pressure, I like the convertible lugs to plugs, the double dogs, just everything about them. After three different manufacturers built aftermarket frames and spools as well as two manufacturers making faster gears for the good old 4/0 (for what, about 20 years?) to convert the reel to a YTS, they finally respond with a factory version and for some reason, it flopped.

Maybe because of the inroduction of the Torque series. Perhaps with the Metal Senator, but it's not topless. I just don't get it myself. That's show biz.

I was told that it ended up costing Penn about $100ea more than they were selling for to put this reel out. Don't know if it's true or not...

Penn needs to offer a narrow 4/0 version of the Metal Senator, they could sell that reel.
