cleaned out an older newell p454 greased and lubed it, put in new bearings and washers, i put the reel on max drag and was still able to pull line out of the reel pretty easily
i know i put the washers in right, with a little bit of cals grease on each one, but im not getting any drag power
is it possible the washers are defective? what should i do?

I put carbontex washers in my torium 20's and they are the shit. Super smooth and they did increase my drag some, don't remember exactly how much more I got but the main difference is in how smooth they work with increased drag pressure.

I love my carbontex drags, something is either assembled wrong or too much grease.

Is the thickness of the old and the new the same, including the washer under the gear? If not, try adding something between the bellville spring and the star, maybe another bellville or.........

is it possible the washers are defective? what should i do? | The carbontex's work just fine. You just need some shimming. Add a beveled spring washer to the top of your drag stack, or add a small curved spring washer to the same place. Play around with different thicknesses until your reel has a slight amount of drag with the star completely backed off. This shimming coupled with the work you have already done will ensure your Newell is working better than new.

i just wiped some of the extra grease off and still no power
what is a beveled spring washer and a curved spring washer?
would it work if i add one of the older drag washers on top of the stack?

This is the what this type of washer looks like.. If you are missing one inside the reel on top of the drag stock or underneath the drag star externally.. If these washers are absent or improperly installed you will get no drag... They look cupped instead of flat...

Your carbontex washers are probably a little thinner than the stock ones you took out. Hell for that matter, even with stock washers and boxes of the same new reels, there is a variance of drag ramp-up. It's up to us to play around a bit and use some shims and beveled washers to change the drag stack height for our needs. I like to have a little drag with the star completely backed off. That way I know that each partial turn of the star is going to give me increasing pressure, all the way until the star bottoms out.

Alan, rather than start another thread I figured I'd ask you here.
I've to two Conquest reels, essentially CTE401s, and put in Cardontex washers. They are greased with Shimano drag grease. The drag feels more even and a bit stronger than the original setup. My question is, have you experimented with the stack of 3, Drag Spring washers?
