If the reel is getting 'crunchy' then you aren't doing a good job of maintaining it. These daiwa baitcasters have pretty low tolerances since they were originally designed for fresh water. You need to rinse them well after usage.

I've had no complaints with mine. Plenty of grumpy bass and halibut have been caught.

It was crunchy when I received it...I tried cleaning, lube etc but the damage was done, Even still I like the reel...I cant wait to get it back all tuned up, Im sure it will be way better now.

Can you tell us what the damamge was ? Does it have brass gears ? Did the gears actually get chewed up and worn ?

I will let you know when I pick it up, My guess was that the gears were just worn and corroded, maybe damaged, alot of the time getting hung up and thumbing the spool to pop 30+# spectra I would imagine isnt good for anything inside the reel...Ocupational hazards.
