I am going on a 7 day trip down to the Midriff Islands in August and am going to get some new rods/reels for the trip as well as a 20lb rig for local pier/kelp bed fishing in San Diego during the summer. What do you think about these pairings:
20lb: Avet SX 5.3 with Shimano Teramar TMC-X80MH
30lb: Avet MXL 5.8 with Calstar 800M
40lb: Avet JX 6/3 with Calstar 700MH
50lb: Avet HX 5/2 with Calstar 765L (No Rollers)
Let me know if you would recommend something other than what I have listed...

Thanks guys for the reassurance. I don't want to get something and say "I wish I would have...". Sounds like I will need an 80lb-100lb rig as well but will most likely rent this one...

Let me know if you would recommend something other than what I have listed... | I think you're under-gunned for a 7-day. Put spectra backing and 30# topshot for a backup reel to your MXL. Leave the Teramar at home. Pick up another 40# outfit (period). Either top your HX with 60# (leaving no 50#) or better yet, pick up a 60-80# rig for heavy dropper loop and/or heavy bait and leave your HX as a 50# rig. For added versatility, make that indispensable extra 40# rig (that I mentioned before...) a two speed JX. Fill it completely with 65# spectra and use very short topshots of either 40# or 50# so it can do double duty in a pinch. You didn't mention the use of spectra, but your whole arsenal can get very versatile if you put straight spectra on all of the reels and bring spools of fluorocarbon as shock leaders (25# - 80# with extra 40# spools). That way all of your reels (except maybe the MXL or SX) can have a wider range of line class. i.e. JX: 40#-50#, HX: 50# -60# etc. Good luck.
Kevin

I just got back this morning and with that list your gonna get your butt kicked.
Cabrilla/Grouper/BSB's and yellows head straight for the rocks and you have to stop them FAST.
JX & HX will work with 50-60 and 80-100 though

The only thing that you will fish that light stuff with is bait in the middle of the night.
I very rarely fish anything less than 30 down there.Id go with
30,40,50,60,80,100.

| | Lets go FISHIN
Name: Jason Vessel: . Location: . Job:. Bio: . |
i took a Tony trip in 1991 (La Paz) Fished mainly newelled YTS, filled with 50#. Yellowtail fishing was tough on that trip and we never did land a jellow on our skiff. We did make few pretty good drifts one day where i hooked four fish on 6 drifts, either jurrels or ambers all of which rocked me on the 4/0 with 50#. Bye bye fish and blue and white 6X.
I was lucky enough to land two big groupers on the trip, and when i say lucky i mean it. The bigger of the two took a very long run on my 6/0 (remember this was 1991 and i was 18 y.o. had no money for gear.) That fish would have easily broke my 100# if he coulda found some structure. In retrospect it makes no sense.
My recommendation would be two serious bottom fishing rigs, filled with spectra 80# and topshots of 60# flouro (short ones). Id probably go with that HX, but the JX6/3 is not a great yoyo reel. At 6/1 its just quite a load, you will be grinding iron all day. You will want something butter smooth to crank, or you will be stiff and sore. Trini 40 would be great for that. Imagine that HX would be nice too.
Something heavy to fish groupers, pargo, 30 or 50 size heavy rig that stops strong fish.
20# rig has no place on that trip. 30# rig, not sure what you would use it for. Maybe to cast small jigs for barries or bones (black skippy) which will be grouper bait. JX would be a good reel to troll rapalas close to the island which you will do for cabrillas and pintos, put 50# on it.
Dont drink the water. PM if i can help.
