$1200-1500 to spend on avets!!!

I've come into a little money (cleaned out the garage and sold a ton of my CRAP on craigslist). I'm looking to upgrade my reels to avets.

Basically I like to fish the 2-3 day boats out of SD but I'm looking towards the future of 5-7 day trips so keep that in mind.

I've got all nice carbon custom rods in 20#, 30#, 40#, 50# classes. I'm looking to spend less than $1500 on 4 avet reels.

My thougths were

20# MXJ single speed (I know the SX would do the trick but it just looks to small)

30# MXJ single speed too. Maybe even the JX 6/3 for an overkill 30# rig. That might be a 40# rig on a longer trip if needed.

40# JX 6/3 two speed. DONE

50# HX 5/2 two speed.

I think that would put me under 1500 for sure and I would have a little extra for line and such.

Looking for some opinions,

Chad

If you think the SX is too small for #20, then maybe:

mxj SS - 20#
MXL 2S - 30#
JX - 2S - 40# sweet reel, may need spectra backing if if fishing long or deep.
Don't know the HX personally.

One bit of advice, before you order the reels with line, be sure they fit the reel seat. Some custom rods have HUGE reel seats. You can have avet send you modified reel seats to fit.

Love my Avets

You can't go wrong with them. The SX is a blast on the albies. The MXL would give you alot more range. I've used mine a the lupe with 40# backed with 65#. Also have the MXJ on a 9ft for throwin iron, Tim on the vag said thats a perfect set-up. Just bought the HX can't wait to get it wet.

Your right on the money with those reels and their prices. You will really be stoked with the reels.

The only things I can add is, the SX isn't "too small" for 20lb. Mine is used for 12/15 but I wouldn't hesitate to put 20 on it. My SX is my second favorite Avet, first is a tie between my twospeed MXL and my HX. I would also sugest using a MXL rather than a JX for 30lb (up here my single speed JX's are 30/40 but I prefer my MXL for 30). The MXL is a "W" but it is not that much out of square and they are nice ballanced reels, I generaly do not like wide reels.

Your "choice" for 40 and 50 are how I have my 2 speed JX's and HX set up.

SX for 20#
MXL 2-speed for 30#
JX 2-speed for 40#
HX 2-speed for 50#

SX is plengty big enough for 20lb, I would even fish 25# on it, and the JX is way too big for 30#. You can also consider the MXJ for 30#. And before you ask, yes I am refering to long topshots on these reels. Not spectra to the rim with short leaders.

Go to a good tackle shop and they will typically agree with my recomendaions. Try Baja Fish Gear, Bob Sands, Noah's Tackle, Charkbait. They are all good tackle shops and will get you set up properly.

Just got back from a 7 day on the Indy. I used my SX 6/4 with a 40lb top shot and it handled fish up to 32lbs and another fellow on the boat landed a 52.8 lb yellow on his SX single speed. I used all my avets up to the HX and found that the MXJ 6/4 and MXL 6/4 handled the yellows with no problem. My HX on the 93H was a surface iron casting machine while my HXJ on a Gf 750H slayed the yellows. My father was on the trip and he really liked the JX 6/3 on the 700 H was his absolute favorite catching 10 fish the last day on the yoyo up to 30 lbs having the best trip of his life. At 75 the low gear was his savior he said. You have a pretty good line up of reels your looking at and the can fish a step or two above what they are rated at. Good look and good fishing.,

Man there are a bunch of people that like the SX!!!!!!!!!!!! I was on a boat last year and a guy had an SX. He caught fish and the reel did a good job. I've been using the Diawa SLX 20 for quite a few years now and that only hold 210 yds of 20# and I don't see a problem with that reel. For some reason I just can't get over the small size of the SX.

Thanks for the info guys,

Chad
