Accurate 870 good enough for Tuna?

Was looking to purchase a Accurate 870 for Tuna and some deep sea fishing. Its this enough reel or should I step up to a 665? Any help would be great. Thanks!

Plenty of reel. I used my 197 for a whole season and it held up great.

It will handle tuna up to about 80lbs. I haven't caught one that big yet but it is a tank.

Yes the B-870 should be what you are looking for , it will hold 300 yds of 30lb mono or 400 yds of 50lb briad with a top shot of your choice , with a 4.1 gear ratio or 6.1 gear ratio . If your looking for the best of both worlds I would suggest you go for the B2-870 with the same line capacity but with both a 6.1 in high and a 3.1 gear ratiion in the low poistion . If we can of any more assistance in helping you choose the right reel , call me at 1-888-222-8372 ext . 21 at the factory ( George Cardenas ) .

The 870 is a great reel for tuna. I have mine loaded with 65# spectra then top shot it with 20-40# flouro. I also use it for rock cod fishing in mexico in 200' to 350' deep water.

Accurates are strong reels!!! On their website you can read about a 233lb Yellow Fin Tuna on a B2-870, I wouldn't fish with mine around a 200lb+ tuna but you certainly don't need to worry about their ability around San Diego.

20+ lbs of drag...I'm thinking its one hell of a tuna reel...I have 4 of them! The bench mark by which all others are measured.

Like Mots said, a 197 will handle anything out of S.D., unless you find a Bigeye!
