Spectra on a saltist

I have a Saltist 50 reel and was wondering if anybody has used spectra on one and what combination as far as pound test for spectra and top shot.

You can use spectra on any reel....just put a little mono or tape backing on the spool first because spectra doesnt "clinch" the spool and it will slip.

Sure, I have a Saltist 50, the one with the slower gears. It's backed with 65 lb Power Pro and I topshot it with 40 lb, but have used it with 50 lb as well. It just became my #1 40 lb live bait reel for fishing Sardines but will handle yoyo iron fishing, too.

Matter of fact, (stop me if you've heard this) see that Yellowtail in the Avatar? Yep on the full size 6X and 50 lb.

I went ahead and changed out the stock drags on mine for the Carbontex washers from Smooth Drag, but the original drags were fine. If I had it to do again, I'd buy another one if I wanted a single speed reel for this purpose.

I believe that the Saltiga's marketing claim was that it is designed to use the braided/woven lines.....which have the potential of cracking/splitting/breaking composite spools.

I run 80lb spectra over a saltist 50 with 5-10m of 100lb flurocarbon for livebaiting.

I ugraded the drags with trini drags and can pull about 12kg max drag. I use this set for skulldragging yellowtail kingfish out of super shallow water
