are 2-speed reels really necessary?

I'm going on a 5 day trip on the topgun 80, in October. I'm interested in buying a Avet LX. Is it worth the extra money to have a two speed reel?

thanks

Two speeds start to make money in 50# line class and above. A five day is where a two-speed starts to be a viable consideration.

What he said. If you hook up a 100lb. Yellow Fin Tuna at the 'Lupe on a long soak, you'll want a 2-speed.

And a shark gun.

No doubt. Great reel. I have 2 JX6/3's. Both spooled with 65 spec. One topped with 40 and the other with 50. Perfect for Lupe.

Old school did it without 2 speeds with straight mono and for sure did not use the boat rail. Times change.

coug45,

We've been on more than a few five day trips and have never had need for our two 2-speed reels, one a 15KG & the other a 30 VSW. A good 40lb outfit will see almost all use. The rest of the time you will probably yearn for a 25lb to 30lb outfit at paddies looking for dorado or maybe albies.

If it were me, knowing now what I wish I had I known when I jumped into this sport, I would have saved my money and used the boat's 2-speed outfits for the very rare occasions when one might be necessary.

BTW, we use Saltiga 50 reels with straight 40lb mono with no fluorocarbon. We've never had trouble with 'lupe Yellow Fin Tuna.

One suggestion that might be of use: buy the best quality you can afford. A screwed up reel when you're hundreds of miles from a tackle shop can make your trip nothing but a long boat ride.

Good fishing,

TT

You know the price difference is around $100 to $120 between a 1 speed and a 2 speed. IMO it's worth the extra money hands down! If you are looking for a deal watch the classifieds there are reels there all the time just realize that you have to move fast when one shows up.
